Cassini finds hints of activity at Saturn moon Dione

May 29, 2013 ? From a distance, most of the Saturnian moon Dione resembles a bland cueball. Thanks to close-up images of a 500-mile-long (800-kilometer-long) mountain on the moon from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, scientists have found more evidence for the idea that Dione was likely active in the past. It could still be active now.

"A picture is emerging that suggests Dione could be a fossil of the wondrous activity Cassini discovered spraying from Saturn's geyser moon Enceladus or perhaps a weaker copycat Enceladus," said Bonnie Buratti of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., who leads the Cassini science team that studies icy satellites. "There may turn out to be many more active worlds with water out there than we previously thought."

Other bodies in the solar system thought to have a subsurface ocean -- including Saturn's moons Enceladus and Titan and Jupiter's moon Europa -- are among the most geologically active worlds in our solar system. They have been intriguing targets for geologists and scientists looking for the building blocks of life elsewhere in the solar system. The presence of a subsurface ocean at Dione would boost the astrobiological potential of this once-boring iceball.

Hints of Dione's activity have recently come from Cassini, which has been exploring the Saturn system since 2004. The spacecraft's magnetometer has detected a faint particle stream coming from the moon, and images showed evidence for a possible liquid or slushy layer under its rock-hard ice crust. Other Cassini images have also revealed ancient, inactive fractures at Dione similar to those seen at Enceladus that currently spray water ice and organic particles.

The mountain examined in the latest paper -- published in March in the journal Icarus -- is called Janiculum Dorsa and ranges in height from about 0.6 to 1.2 miles (1 to 2 kilometers). The moon's crust appears to pucker under this mountain as much as about 0.3 mile (0.5 kilometer).

"The bending of the crust under Janiculum Dorsa suggests the icy crust was warm, and the best way to get that heat is if Dione had a subsurface ocean when the ridge formed," said Noah Hammond, the paper's lead author, who is based at Brown University, Providence, R.I.

Dione gets heated up by being stretched and squeezed as it gets closer to and farther from Saturn in its orbit. With an icy crust that can slide around independently of the moon's core, the gravitational pulls of Saturn get exaggerated and create 10 times more heat, Hammond explained. Other possible explanations, such as a local hotspot or a wild orbit, seemed unlikely.

Scientists are still trying to figure out why Enceladus became so active while Dione just seems to have sputtered along. Perhaps the tidal forces were stronger on Enceladus, or maybe the larger fraction of rock in the core of Enceladus provided more radioactive heating from heavy elements. In any case, liquid subsurface oceans seem to be common on these once-boring icy satellites, fueling the hope that other icy worlds soon to be explored -- like the dwarf planets Ceres and Pluto -- could have oceans underneath their crusts. NASA's Dawn and New Horizons missions reach those dwarf planets in 2015.

The Cassini-Huygens mission is a cooperative project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, manages the Cassini-Huygens mission for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL designed, developed and assembled the Cassini orbiter and its two onboard cameras. The imaging team consists of scientists from the United States, England, France and Germany. The imaging operations center is based at the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.

Hammond's work was funded through a NASA Outer Planets Research grant.

Relocate to Tampa Bay | 4 Tips for Moving with Teens - Smith ...

Relocating or moving can be stressful for everyone in the family, but it can particularly hard on older kids and teens. They are established, comfortable and know their friends and their neighborhood. Sure, they may be up for the adventure, but there still might be some hurt feelings and pushback. There may not be much you can do about the latter, but parents can certainly emphasize the adventure, to keep your kids focused on the good in this major life change.

Here are 4 ways to get your teens involved in your move and help them focus on what they are about to gain rather than what they are leaving behind.

Your teenager may be upset because they don?t really have a say in the decision overall, but allowing them to help you decide on your travel route gives them back a bit of that independence and control. Plus, this responsibility can help them learn about map reading, travel budgets and how to overcome obstacles like rush hours, traffic backups and unforeseen circumstances on the road. If you are traveling cross-country or overnight, allow them to help you decide when to stop for meals and travel breaks.

While your kids might have something to say about picking the new house, since they are not the buyers, take that advice with a grain of salt. Understand that teens will be focused on different aspects of home life and amenities than you will be. Instead, encourage them to research the new neighborhood. Where are the closest parks, coffee shops, libraries, bike trails, public pools and other places to hang out? Have them create a list of fun things to do and interesting places to go in your new neighborhood before you get there. Then, once you arrive, cruise around to those places so your kids can see what they look like live rather than online.

Sure, the kids may not be part of the overall purchase decision, but they can still decide what to do with their rooms. If you are not moving too far away, or the property allows for a virtual tour, give your kids the opportunity to see the new place and make plans before moving day. Encourage them to try something new when it comes to style, color or d?cor. As part of your moving budget, set aside some cash for their room redecoration. Make it specific and encourage thrifty shopping. If money is tight and they want something above and beyond, it can always come out of their own pockets.

Don?t call it a ?goodbye? party. Instead, remind your kids that they will get to see their friends again soon. If you are moving fairly close, be sure to set dates for hanging out again after you get situated. If you are moving farther away, make sure all the families have each other?s phone numbers, emails and Skype handles for face time chats!

Facebook reportedly no longer in talks to acquire Waze

It seems like a lot of people binged on the new episodes of Arrested Development, which is certainly a win for Netflix, stock be damned, and it's the second success of its young life in the original programming world. Sure,?Hemlock Grove hasn't quite caught fire, but that Arrested and this past winter's House of Cards were such popular television/Internet events means that Netflix has figured something out. That doesn't mean that there's no room for improvement, though.

Bird flu drug resistance concern

Drug resistance has been detected in patients infected with the new bird flu that has emerged in China, say doctors.

The H7N9 virus became resistant to Tamiflu in three out of 14 patients treated with antiviral drugs at Shanghai Public Health Clinical Centre.

The researchers, writing in the Lancet, said resistance emerged with "apparent ease" and was "concerning".

There have been no new cases of the infection for more than two weeks.

Resistance

Doctors analysed the virus in 14 patients. All had pneumonia and half needed ventilation to keep them alive.

Treatment with antivirals reduced levels of H7N9 in most patients and led to an improvement in symptoms.

Yet the treatment failed in three patients. Genetic testing of the virus in these patients showed it had acquired the mutations needed to resist the drugs.

The doctors believe that in at least one patient the emergence of resistance was a direct consequence of treatment with Tamiflu.

Such antiviral drugs are the only way of treating the infection.

The researchers said: "The apparent ease with which antiviral resistance emerges in H7N9 viruses is concerning, it needs to be closely monitored and considered in future pandemic response plans."

There have been 131 confirmed cases and 36 deaths since the virus was first reported early this year.

However, the most recent case reported was on 8 May. Efforts to close poultry markets are thought to have significantly reduced the spread of the virus.

Mimobot USB Flash Drives

Anyone on the hunt for a USB flash drive has surely stumbled across a few novelty drives. We've reviewed a few as well, like the Dane-Elec Marvel Avengers USB Drives and Dane-Elec Marvel Universe USB Drives. Generally speaking, while these drives may not wow anyone with blazing fast performance or top-of-the-line features, they are the drives that people actually notice, and add to their own wish lists. Mimoco has made its name in the novelty drive category, with drives depicting characters and historical figures as varied as Batman and Albert Einstein. In a recent batch of Mimobot drives, we've been presented with favorites figures from history, pop culture, and current cartoons?Presidents George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, rock star Elvis Presley, and My Little Pony fan-favorite Rainbow Dash.

Design
The Mimobot design is pretty standard?a big, elongated head, which doubles as the USB plug cap, and a small body at one end. In the Mimobot Legends series, these figures are all roughly based on actual people. Included in this review are Presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as well as rock icon Elvis Presley.

Washington is decked out in regimental dress, white powdered wig, and a removable Colonial-era Tricorn hat, with a cluster of cherries in one hand. On the back of the drive is an image of Washington's own signature.

Lincoln is depicted in, to quote Mimoco, "his classic mid-19th century theater-going duds," complete with vest and bow-tie (I realize the Lincoln assassination was a while ago, but this still seems to be in poor taste). Again, the back of the drive features Lincoln's signature.

Slightly different is the Mimobot Legends Elvis Aloha from Hawaii, which features The King in full jumpsuit regalia. Inspired by the rhinestone studded jumpsuit worn in the Elvis Aloha from Hawaii satellite broadcast in 1973, his outfit includes a Hawaiian lei. Elvis' lip curls in his signature snarl, and he's got considerably more hair on his head than Lincoln does.

The fourth drive sent by Mimoco is from the Mimobot Pop Culture line-up?it's Rainbow Dash from the new version of My Little Pony. Being a pony, Rainbow Dash has no outfit to speak of, but the basic design is the same, with a little body at one end and an elongated head at the other. Rainbow Dash is blue, with a suitably multicolored mane and tail. Mimoco also says that the drive is full of speed, spunk, and "undeniable charisma," but such claims are difficult to verify, even in our testing lab.

Though I could probably make a couple of suggestions about the designs?Washington gets a tricorn hat but Lincoln's famed stovepipe top hat is missing??they all look pretty good.

Bonus Content
All of the Mimobot drives also come with bonus content, centered on the character or figure of the drive. Presidents Washington and Lincoln both offer the same content?a collection of wallpapers for computer, tablet, and smartphone, as well as custom icons and avatar images, all featuring one or both of the presidents. While some of these were interesting, it was a little disappointing that all of these images feature pictures of the drive, rather than any of the more realistic portraits of the actual historical figures.

This same complaint could not be made of the Elvis Aloha from Hawaii drive. In addition to the wallpapers, icons, and avatars, the drive includes two extensive photo albums, one centered around the Elvis: Aloha from Hawaii special?and includes more than 50 photos, documents, and behind the scenes glimpses of that iconic event?and the other centered around Elvis' military service, complete with publicity photos, shots of Elvis in training for combat, and even his honorable discharge papers. There are also two video interviews. All in all, it's an impressive collection of content, and worthwhile for any Elvis fan.

The Rainbow Dash drive also comes with My Little Pony-themed wallpapers, icons, and avatars, but adds sound, with character voices announcing when you've plugged in the drive or copied a folder. Obviously, these candy-colored, ultra-perky extras aren't for everyone, but Ponies and Bronies alike will probably be delighted.

Pricing and Performance
All four Mimobot drives are similar once the caps are pulled off and the drives are plugged in. Each drive uses a USB 2.0 connection, and is formatted in FAT32 for broad compatibility?Windows, Mac, even Linux should all work well with the drives. All four drives were 8GB in capacity, and sell for a list price of $24.95, which works out to roughly $3.11 per GB. While this is a bit pricey for a basic USB drive, the fan-favorite designs and bonus content will add value that most flash drives don't offer. The similar Dane-Elec Marvel Universe drives sell for a similar $3.37 per GB. Take away the fan appeal and these drives are comparable to other basic drives, like the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it USB Drive, a 4GB drive which sells for $1.83 per GB, or the LaCie PetiteKey (16GB), which sells for $1.43 per GB.

Performance wasn't identical among the four drives, but it was similar. In timed data transfer tests George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Elvis all clocked in at roughly 27 MBps (Read) and 5 MBps (Write). Rainbow Dash, on the other hand, came up a bit different, with 23 MBps (read) and 5 MBps (write). To compare, the Marvel Universe drives had speeds of 30MBps (read) and 4MBps (write), the Verbatim Store N' Go Clip-it (15MBps read; 6MBps write) and the LaCie PetiteKey (14 MBps read, 6 MBps write).

Whether you're looking to show people that you're a hunk of burning love, a fan of Honest Abe, or just a My Little Pony aficionado, Mimoco's novelty flash drives send the message loud and clear. All four Mimobot drives?Washington, Lincoln, Elvis, and Rainbow Dash?offer passable performance, made all the more appealing with eye-catching designs and fan-friendly bonus content. For the performance and feature minded, there's always the Editors' Choice Kingston DataTraveler Locker+ G2 (16GB), but for everyone else, there's Mimobot that's perfect for you.

JVC HA-MR77X

Recently, JVC updated its affordable Xtreme Xplosives line of headphones. The JVC HA-MR77X, at $99.95 (list), is a bulky option with a bright red cable, an inline remote and microphone, and earcups that swivel away from the ear for DJ-use. Deep bass is delivered with power and clarity, but the HA-MR77X struggles with the rest of mix, tweaking the mids and highs in ways that can make some genres sound tinny or harsh. The one-button remote is also limited, with no volume control. While audio is delivered distortion-free, there are better options in this price range.

Design
Visually, the HA-MR77X recalls the Beats headphones lineup a bit, with its chunky design and black-and red color scheme. The large, circumaural (around-the-ear) earcups are heavily cushioned and comfortable, but eventually the headband, which is covered in a black, rubberized material, can feel like it's putting too much pressure on the scalp. There is nothing approximating soft padding on the underside of the headband, and these headphones feel heavy. They can even feel unstable if you move your head backwards.

The large earcups, which have black glossy plastic surfaces emblazoned with the XX logo for the headphone line, can swivel both away from the ear and also forward or backward. There are notches that hold the earcups in place when swiveling forward or backward so you don't have to hold them there. This is a nice feature for DJs, but the rest of the design makes the HA-MR77X less than ideal for a real DJ set. (And since JVC points out the DJ as a prime customer for the HA-MR77X on the product's web page, we have to point out the issues.)

JVC HA-MR77X inline

For starters, the bright red cable is not detachable. That's not a deal-breaker for regular headphones, but you will rarely see a quality DJ pair that lacks this feature to let you replace the cable when necessary. The inline remote on the cable is of the single-button variety, which works fine for playing, pausing, and skipping tracks, as well as answering calls, but there's no way to control the volume. The headphone jack terminates in 3.5mm?ideal for mobile devices, but not for DJ-ing. Finally, the audio performance is not ideal for DJ-level gear?more on the audio in the next section. Call clarity through the included microphone is fine?nothing excellent, but your partner will understand you.

Performance
The HA-MR77X provides a tremendous, thunderous bass response. On tracks with challenging sub-bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout," there is no distortion, even at top, uncomfortably loud listening levels. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the bass response is that it manages to provide a very powerful dose of deep low-end without sounding muddy. "Silent Shout" can easily sound like an unbalanced, booming disaster, but instead the punch and sustain of the deep synth drum loop is delivered cleanly and clearly. The sub-bass range is delivered, but it doesn't receive preferential treatment.

Unfortunately, things fall apart in mid-to-high-range performance. The HA-MR77X tweaks the mids and high-mids in all the wrong spots, resulting in a sound signature that can often sound tinny, harsh, or even muffled. Bill Callahan's vocals on "Drover" receive the worst of it?sometimes it sounds like he is singing into a Dixie cup instead of a microphone. The guitar strums manage to sound natural, but the HA-MR77X's delivery of the drums mixes the best of the strong-but-refined bass response with the worst of the highly sculpted mids and highs?the thump of the drums is there, but the attack sounds tinny and unnatural.

The tweaked mids and highs are a better pairing for Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church in the Wild." The attack of the kick drum loop has a nice high-mid punch to it, while the boosted low-end provides just the right amount of low-end push. The sub bass synth hits sound nice and round without ever getting muddy or undefined. The vocals on this track also sound a bit less pinched and tweaked than they do on "Drover," though Jay-Z's vocals are still delivered with too much high-end tweaking.

This sound signature doesn't do too many favors to classical music. John Adams' "The Chairman Dances" has a nice richness to the lower register strings through the HA-MR77X, but higher register strings and brass, which already have a natural edge and brightness to them, are sculpted into a harsh sound here. Like Jay-Z's vocals, they seem to have too much high frequency presence, not enough of the rest of the range, and they end up sounding unnatural.

Years ago, I'd tell you this is what you get when you pay $100 for a pair of headphones. Times have changed, however, and the drivers and sound signatures of $100-and-below headphones have drastically improved in recent years. In other words, you have better options in this price range, and if you are looking for a true DJ headphone pair, you'll probably want to spend a bit more?the Numark Electrowave?is a solid, budget DJ option with a more functional design and better sonic performance than the HA-MR77X.

If you're just interested in a solid sounding pair of headphones in the price range, the Logitech UE 4000 delivers clean, deep bass and has a removable cable, while the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro will appeal to those who want a flatter response?and it's also ideal for studio use (though not for DJ-ing). And if all of these options are a bit out of your range, but you still want a pair that can bring the bass, the Skullcandy Hesh 2 is a solid performer for the price. The JVC HA-MR77X isn't fundamentally bad; it's just not on the level of equally priced competition, whether we're talking about audio performance or design elements, like removable cables and better inline remotes.

'Iron Man 3' star Rebecca Hall heads to Broadway

NEW YORK (AP) ? Rebecca Hall, who plays a brilliant biologist in "Iron Man 3," will soon get to play a murderer onstage.

The Roundabout Theatre Company said Tuesday that Hall will star on Broadway in the first revival of "Machinal" since it made its debut 85 years ago.

Previews begin Dec. 20 at the American Airlines Theatre and opening night is Jan. 16.

Sophie Treadwell's play is inspired by the 1927 murder trial of Ruth Brown Snyder, who was executed after helping her lover kill her husband.

When it debuted on Broadway in 1928, the role of the lover was played by the then-unknown Clark Gable.

Hall, an English actress who earned a Golden Globe nomination for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," also appeared in Ben Affleck's "The Town" and on TV in "Parade's End."

VICKSBURG, Miss.: Chaney fears some won't get health insurance ...

AMANDA McCOY/SUN HERALD Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney talks with the Sun Herald editorial board on Tuesday, January 19 2010 in Gulfport.

AMANDA McCOY ? SUN HERALDBuy Photo

? Mississippi Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney says he fears some people won't be able to get health insurance when enrollment under the federal law opens in October.

The Affordable Care Act was designed to provide affordable health insurance coverage to Americans regardless of income. Open enrollment programs under the act starts in October. The act takes effect Jan. 1, 2014.

Chaney told the Vicksburg Post that confusion over plans, coverages and rates during the enrollment period could discourage some from getting insurance.

"I'm afraid some of the programs may cost too much or people will get upset over the process and not get coverage," he said.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant rejected a federal offer to expand Medicaid with the federal government paying 100 percent of the costs for the first three years. He also rejected a state insurance exchange, which Chaney said was developed during the administration of then-Gov. Haley Barbour and could have saved the state money.

Federal officials, Chaney said, told the state in February that it would not have a state insurance exchange.

Chaney said Bryant didn't want to use the insurance exchange because he believed it was embracing the federal law.

"I said, 'Do you understand that without a state exchange, you're embracing the Affordable Care Act from the federal government and we forever give the keys to the federal government to control our insurance,'" he said.

Because Bryant rejected using the insurance exchange, Chaney said, "I have no ability to regulate rates on the exchange; they (companies) can charge whatever they want. Because I can't regulate, I have no authority to handle consumer complaints."

Chaney said he can ensure the insurance plans conform to state law, and make sure policies cover the state's mandatory health benefits.

Chaney said a state exchange would have saved the state money by providing insurance coverage to people whose incomes range from 100 percent to 138 percent of the poverty level.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the 2013 poverty level for a single person is $11,490.

Tony Kanaan finally wins Indy 500, ends heartbreak

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? The hard-luck loser no more, Tony Kanaan finally won the Indianapolis 500 Sunday ? with a bit of luck, at that.

In the mix all day during a record 68 lead changes, Kanaan dipped inside defending IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay on a restart with three laps to go.

From there, he cruised to Victory Lane under the yellow caution flag, flipping up his visor to wipe tears from his eyes as the crowd roared.

"I have to say, the last lap was the longest lap of my life," the popular Brazilian said.

"I got a little bit of luck today," said Kanaan, drenched in the celebratory milk. "I was looking at the stands, and it was unbelievable. I'm speechless. This is it, man. I made it."

Kanaan had his fair share of chances to win at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, but came up short time and time again. He was leading when the rain came in 2007, only to lose to Dario Franchitti when the race resumed.

In all, Kanaan went into Sunday's race with 221 laps led ? more than any other non-winner except Michael Andretti and Rex Mays ? but his second-place finish to Buddy Rice in 2004 was the closest he had come to victory. He had a pair of third-place finishes, including last year, again to Franchitti.

This time, it was Franchitti whose crash brought out the final caution to seal Kanaan's victory.

"It's wonderful for him," said Mario Andretti, himself a victim to bad luck at Indy. "He's raced here long enough that he deserves it, no question. He was strong all day. Certainly he deserves this in every way."

The win for Kanaan and car owner Jimmy Vasser was celebrated throughout the paddock as the losers all enjoyed seeing the popular IndyCar duo celebrate. Alex Zanardi, who came from Italy to watch the Indianapolis 500 and gave Kanaan one of his 2012 London Paralympics medals as good luck, wept behind the pit wall as Kanaan took the checkered flag.

"I tell you I'm starting to think (the medal) really works," Zanardi said. "It's a dream come true to see Tony win, to see Jimmy Vasser win, my dear friend. I'm so happy, I'm so happy."

Fellow Brazilian Helio Castroneves, shooting for a record-tying fourth Indy win, was happy for his long-time friend.

"Finally he's able to win this race. He's so close so many times, but the good news is the good old boys are still able to run fast," Castroneves said.

Carlos Munoz, a 21-year-old rookie making his first IndyCar start, finished second and Hunter-Reay was third.

"He's certainly someone I'd want to see win it if I can't win it myself," Hunter-Reay said. "We were a sitting duck on the last restart, that's all I can say."

The leaders came to the finish line all bunched up around Kanaan, saluting the longtime IndyCar stalwart who had longed to add the one missing piece to his resume. That was about as slow as anyone had driven all day. The average speed was 187.433 mph, another Indy record.

Marco Andretti finished fourth, failing to win for the eighth time, and Justin Wilson was fifth in the highest-finishing Honda on a day that was dominated by Chevrolet. Castroneves was sixth.

For a time, it appeared the win would go to AJ Allmendinger, who led 23 laps in his Indy 500 debut for Roger Penske.

Fired by Penske from his NASCAR ride last year after failing a NASCAR drug test, Penske gave him a second chance with this IndyCar opportunity. Seven years after leaving open-wheel racing, Allmendinger finally ran "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" and was leading when his seat belt came undone, forcing him to pit.

It put Allmendinger off the pit cycle, and he was forced to stop for gas twice far in advance of the rest of the field. It meant Allmendinger had to drive his way back to the front each time, and he finally sputtered out at seventh.

"Once I figured it out, it was phenomenal. I could drive by guys at will when I wanted to," Allmendinger said. "I felt like we were up front running our own race, and, I don't know, belts come undone. It just popped.

"I'll be honest, pretty special moment to be leading at Indy. My body kind of went numb, my mind was racing and I could feel my heart beating really fast, and that's a special moment I'll never forget."

A year after 34 lead changes and a frantic finish created an Indianapolis 500 many considered to be the best ever, IndyCar had its hands full in trying to top itself.

So this one, with the slicing and dicing at the front, over and over and over again, might have been even better. There were a record 68 lead changes by 14 drivers.

"It was a hell of a race. That's all I can say," said Mario Andretti. "This is riveting competition, that's all I can tell you. It's just amazing. The reliability of the cars is there. The product is there. It's unbelievable racing, the best I've seen in years."

Apps of the Week: Tetris Blitz, Impossible Road, Limelight, and more

Apps of the Week: Tetris Blitz, Impossible Road, Limelight, and more

Every week, the editors and writers at iMore carefully select some of our favorite, most useful, most extraordinary apps. This week's selections include a few games, an awesome read-later app, an app for keeping track of movies, a guitar tuner, an app dedicated to a famous classic band, and app that that is sure to increase your typing speed on the iPhone.

Pocket - Ally Kazmucha

I've tried many read it later services and up until last year, I had always used Instapaper. Then when RIL (Read It Later) transformed into Pocket and got a major overhaul, I couldn't stop myself from trying it. And I haven't looked back sense.

Pocket is absolutely gorgeous. Not only that, it's super fast and supports almost any browser and platform you could think of. Not only is there a native iPhone and iPad app, but a Mac one too. And for those who like to save things directly from their browsers, yep, there's support for those too. Even reading on the Pocket website is enjoyable.

The way content is laid out is unique and one of the best I've found so far. If you haven't tried it out yet, it's free so you've got nothing to lose.

Limelight - Joseph Keller

Limelight is an iPhone app that helps you keep track of movies, not just those in your collection, but also those that you may have just seen in theaters, as well as those you want to see. Create an account and begin searching for movies and mark whether or not you?ve seen them. Movies will then either be added to your Watched or To Watch lists, which can be shared with other Limelight users as well as your friends, through Twitter, Facebook, iMessage, and email. You can also follow the libraries that other users publish, finding new movies that you want to see by doing so. If you see or own a lot of movies, Limelight is a great way to keep track of and share them all. Check it out on the App Store for $1.99.

Impossible Road - Simon Sage

If Super Hexagon has taught me anything, it's that I'm a sucker for punishment. Enter the brutally difficult Impossible Road. There are no power-ups, no in-app purchases, and barely any colors or shapes. All you have to do is keep a ball on a downward-spiraling track for as long as possible using left and right tap controls. If you fall off, you've got a moment to land on the track further down, but if you free-fall for too long, you've got to start all over. Players are scored based on how many checkpoints they pass through or skip by falling off the edge and recovering. The high contrast art style and minimalist music keep tension high for the fleeting seconds you manage to stay on the track. If you have any unresolved childhood issues with Rainbow Road from Mario Kart, or have an innate fear of heights to get over revel in, Impossible Road is a good place to start.

Guitar Tune - Chris Parsons

After being away for a couple of months, I cam home and decided I wanted to play a little guitar. I quickly realized that before I could do that, it would certainly need some tuning. For the life of me, I couldn't find my tuner so figured it would be a perfect time to try out some of the tuner apps available on iOS. I download 3-4 and began testing them out, in the end I went with a free (ad-supported) one called Guitar Tuna and well, I'm never paying for a tuner app again. Guitar Tuna is awesome, idiot proof and free. Can't really beat it. If you're looking for a basic and easy to use guitar tuning app, look no further.

Free - Download Now

The Doors - Richard Devine

Sadly this week saw the passing of The Doors' keyboard player, Ray Manzarek. So, what better way to commemorate than by kicking back listening to their 'Best of' album and checking out the official The Doors app on the iPad.

Pictures, music, videos, lyrics, all here and only the beginning. The Doors app for iPad is filled with content about the band, how they created their sound, and even an exclusive comic that chronicles Jim Morrison's 'Incident' in Miami. A must have for all The Doors fans out there.

TextExpander Touch - Rene Ritchie

Just over a month ago, Text Expander Touch was my pick of the week. Why am I picking it again so soon? Because Smile Software just released Text Expander Touch 2.0.

The basic overall functionality hasn't changed, and everything I used before is still what I use now -- I type in shots bits of text and TE spits out long strings of code or copy. Here's the example I used last time, typing this:

ssocial

Automagically gets me this:

Twitter: http://twitter.com/imore Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/imorecom Google+: http://www.gplus.to/imore YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/imorevideo

But for the higher level nerds among us, here's what's new:

Fill-in snippets, formatted snippets (including copy and send email actions), "Insert?" menu item for macros, %\ selection range macros, and more.

In other words, the power user just got handed a bunch more power.

Tetris Blitz - Leanna Lofte

I've always been a big Tetris fan, and Tetris Blitz is a new twist to the class game. You have two minutes to clear as many lines as possible, but instead of the traditional gameplay of rotating and dropping each piece, Tetris Blitz gives you options for placement of the pieces. You simply tap the spot you want the piece to go, or cycle through more choices. There are also power-up in Tetris Blitz that help you rack up the points. Tetris Blitz is not traditional Tetris, but I'm enjoying this new, high-paced version.

Your choice?

Now that we've chosen our favorites for the week, we want to hear yours! Did you pick up a killer app, accessory, or game this week? Let us know in the comments below!

Original ?Ultimate Fighter? Forrest Griffin retires

After 26 fights and a key role in turning the UFC into the promotion it is today, Forest Griffin has retired. His decision was announced at the UFC 160 post-fight press conference.

"It's been a good eight years, I guess. Biggest thing I've learned ... when [UFC president] Dana White says retire otherwise you will blow your knee out," Griffin said at the press conference.

Griffin's last fight was a win over UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz in July of 2012. Coincidentally, it was Ortiz's last bout before retirement. He won that fight by decision. His career included 19 wins, 7 losses and stint as the UFC light heavyweight champion.

What Griffin will always be remembered for is being one-half of a fight that catapulted the UFC into fame. He and Stephan Bonnar were finalists on the first season of the UFC's reality show, "The Ultimate Fighter." Their fight was a close, thrilling battle that played on Spike TV on April 9, 2005.

It was responsible for earning the UFC many fans, which helped earn bigger sponsors and television deals. Griffin won the decision, taking the title of the first "Ultimate Fighter," but both fighters were given contracts.

During the media scrum following the press conference, White said that Griffin and Bonnar will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame together.

Griffin went on to be a force in the 205-lb. division, upsetting Pride star Mauricio "Shogun" Rua in 2007, then taking the belt from Quinton "Rampage" Jackson in July of 2008. He lost the belt to Rashad Evans that December.

White said Griffin will continue to have a role with the UFC.

French soldier stabbed in throat outside Paris

PARIS (AP) ? A French soldier was stabbed in the throat in a busy commercial district outside Paris on Saturday, and France's president said authorities are investigating any possible links with the recent slaying of a British soldier.

President Francois Hollande said the identity of the attacker was unknown and cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the assault on the uniformed soldier in the La Defense shopping area. The life of the 23-year-old soldier was not in danger, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The stabbing follows the slaying Wednesday of a British soldier, who was brutally stabbed on a London street in broad daylight in a suspected terrorist attack that has raised fears of potential copycat strikes.

"There could be a link, but we will look at all the elements," Hollande said during a news conference in Ethiopia, where he was traveling.

The British soldier, 25-year-old Lee Rigby, was attacked while walking outside the Royal Artillery Barracks in the Woolwich area of south London.

The gruesome scene was recorded on witnesses' cellphones, and a video has emerged in which one of the two suspects ? his hands bloodied ? boasted of their exploits and warned of more violence as the soldier lay on the ground. Holding bloody knives and a meat cleaver, the suspects waited for the arrival of police, who shot them in the legs, according to witnesses.

In the video, one of the suspects declared, "We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you ... We must fight them as they fight us."

Two Muslim hard-liners have identified that suspect as Michael Adebolajo, a Christian who converted to Islam and attended several London demonstrations organized by banned British radical group al-Muhajiroun.

French security forces have been on heightened alert since their country launched a military intervention in the African nation of Mali in January to regain territory seized by Islamic radicals.

Hagel: Cadets must stamp out sex assault scourge

(AP) ? Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point on Saturday that they must stamp out the scourge of sexual assault in the military.

A day after President Barack Obama delivered a similar edict to U.S. Naval Academy graduates, Hagel's message comes amid a series of widespread incidents of sexual misconduct across the armed services in recent months and a new report showing that the problem is growing. The challenge is particularly poignant for the West Point crowd, since earlier in the week an Army sergeant was charged with secretly photographing and videotaping at least a dozen women at the upper New York state academy, including in a bathroom.

"Sexual harassment and sexual assault in the military are a profound betrayal ? a profound betrayal ? of sacred oaths and sacred trusts," Hagel told 1,007 graduating cadets during a cold, rainy outdoor ceremony. "This scourge must be stamped out. We are all accountable and responsible for ensuring that this happens. We cannot fail the Army or America. We cannot fail each other and we cannot fail the men and women that we lead."

Hagel, who served in the Army in Vietnam, took the opportunity to reflect on his own time in uniform and the lessons that he said must resonate as the soldiers take on the job of helping to transform the military. It was his first graduation address as defense chief.

The graduates, he said, must be the generation of leaders who will stop the debilitating and insidious threats of suicide, sexual assault and drug and alcohol abuse that are hurting the all-volunteer force.

Wounded twice during his roughly one year at war, Hagel has two Purple Hearts and is the first man to become secretary of defense after serving only in the enlisted corps. Reflecting on his military service, Hagel said his time in the Army shaped him forever.

"In Vietnam, I learned that combat is a furnace that can consume you, or it can forge you into something better and stronger than you were before," said Hagel, who took over the job as Pentagon chief at the end of February.

He also told the graduates that they must begin to build the future Army as the service recovers from the strains of more than a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Future conflicts, he said, will take on new and unfamiliar forms, and the military must be ready to face them even as budget cuts force the service to curtail training and trim the number of soldiers from a wartime high of about 570,000 to 490,000.

But he said that readiness will be strained by health and social problems.

Pentagon leaders have been struggling to deal with what they have come to call an epidemic of sexual assaults in the military. A Pentagon report released this month estimated that as many as 26,000 military service members may have been sexually assaulted last year and that thousands of victims are unwilling to come forward despite new oversight and assistance programs. The estimate was based largely on anonymous surveys.

According to the report, the number of sexual assaults actually reported by military service members rose 6 percent to 3,374 in 2012. And nearly 800 of those simply sought help but declined to file complaints against their attackers.

Spurred on by furious Congress members, the Defense Department has ordered the services to come up with ways to curb the problem and better help the victims.

In the latest case, Sgt. 1st Class Michael McClendon is facing charges of dereliction of duty, mistreatment, entering a women's bathroom without notice, and taking and possessing inappropriate photos and videos of at least a dozen women who were naked or in various states of undress.

The women have been notified by the Army about the matter.

He was charged May 14 with violating four articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, but some of the allegations date back to 2009. He has been transferred to Fort Drum, N.Y. It isn't immediately clear if McClendon has a lawyer.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey has called the problem a crisis and said the women who serve in the military are losing confidence that it can be solved.

From the ?Who Doesn?t Belong and Whhhhhhyyyyyyy?? file, Pop Warner football will honor on Saturday night the Patriots, Patriots TE Aaron Hernandez, former Patriots TE Ben Coates, Redskins RB Alfred Morris, and Nancy Kerrigan.

The Bills? new defense is designed to create confusion.? (Unlike the team?s recent defenses, the confusion ideally will be experienced by the members of the opposing offense.)

Dolphins OT Jonathan Martin is ?excited? (calm down, Tebow) for the chance to play on the left side, and he has bulked up to help improve his performance.

When scouts went to Tennessee to watch wideouts Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter, they?d emerge curious about Jets WR Zach Rogers.

P Brian Moorman is more than a camp leg for the Steelers.

The Browns are shaking up their media relations department.

Here?s a look at whether Bengals CB Leon Hall is underrated.

Texans QB Matt Schaub says he?s his toughest critic.? (That makes me feel like less of a jerk.? Slightly.)

Former Jaguars TE Pete Mitchell autographed a photo of himself being chased by Ray Lewis in creative fashion.

Colts G.M. Ryan Grigson will be honored next month by the National Football Foundation.

Raiders LB Nick Roach said it?s obvious his teammates showed up for OTAs ready to work.

Former Chargers coach Sid Gillman is No. 18 on ESPN?s all-time list of coaches.

Redskins LT Trent Williams thinks the team?s offense doesn?t put QB Robert Griffin III at risk, because the plays on which he injured his knee weren?t ?called runs.?

Cowboys DT Josh Brent has been placed on a new portable alcohol monitoring system that requires urine and breath testing at regular and random intervals.

It?s still too early to know who?ll win the starting quarterback job for the Eagles.

When the Giants recently welcomed the Manchester City Football Club to the Timex Performance Center, defender Micah Richards passed on the chance to catch balls from the JUGS machine; ?I don?t trust my hands actually,? Richards said.

Vikings RB Adrian Peterson doesn?t believe in same-sex marriage, but he also doesn?t believe P Chris Kluwe?s support for it got him cut.

Lions S Ricardo Silva heard that people thought he was a little slow last season, so he has worked on getting faster.

LB Brian Urlacher says of the Bears organization:? ?There?s one person I could really take or leave.?? (Bill Swerski?)

A Janesville, Wisconsin couple has won the truck previously owned by Packers QB Aaron Rodgers.? (It?s a Ford, which is fitting, since the Fords and Rodgers separately own the Lions.)

Retired Buccaneers DB Rond? Barber has gotten the key to the city of Tampa.? (There?s only one condition:? He can?t loan it to Tiki.)

Saints coach Sean Payton apparently spent plenty of time working out during his one-season suspension.

A Georgia man is accused of trying to alter checks written by Falcons WR Julio Jones and Falcons CB Christopher Owens.

Rams WR Tavon Austin took a few handoffs during practice on Friday.

Seahawks WR Justin Veltung can perform a 56-inch standing box jump.

With the Cardinals drafting LB Alex Okafor, LB Sam Acho once again will help mentor Okafor.

Decensae White, a star basketball player at San Francisco State University and a former college roommate of 49ers WR Michael Crabtree, has been arrested on suspicion of murdering rapper Lil? Phat, also known as Melvin Vernell III.? (And he?s where we emphasize that Decensae White, not Michael Crabtree, faces the murder charge.? Not Michael Crabtree.? Not Crabtree.? Not.? Crab.? Tree.)

Four questions that will be answered by UFC 160

UFC 160 is just days away. What questions will be answered by Saturday's fights?

Who is the greatest heavyweight in all of the land? Cain Velasquez dominated Antonio Silva in their first bout, but that was a Silva who had just lost to Daniel Cormier. Now, coming off the shocking knockout of Alistair Overeem, will we see an improved Silva or will Velasquez hold onto his belt?

Will Benson Henderson's next opponent impress? The winner of T.J. Grant's bout with Gray Maynard is supposed to get a title bout with Benson Henderson. But as we know from experience, title shots can be taken away if Maynard and Grant don't deliver on Saturday night.

Can Donald Cerrone get past the mental problems he has had in the cage? There's no questioning Cerrone's talent. He has the skill to be a force in the cage, but then why did he lose to Anthony Pettis? He visited a sports psychologist after that January loss.

"It's trying to figure out, what do I do in the cage that I don't do in training?" Cerrone said to MMA Junkie. "Because in training, I don't lose a round."

Since he trains at Jackson's MMA, this is no small feat. Can he translate that training into performance in the cage against Strikeforce import K.J. Noons?

Which up-and-coming lightweight will win? Khabib Nurmagomedov is 19-0 and needed just two minutes to take out Thiago Tavares in January. Abel Trujillo is 10-4, but won his last five fights. His TKO of Marcu Levesseur was one of the more memorable finishes of late last year. Which of these lightweight up-and-comers will come out with a win?

LONDON (AP) ? The British government's emergency committee met Thursday after two attackers butchered a British soldier in a daylight attack in London that raised fears terrorism had returned to the capital.

Prime Minister David Cameron says there are strong indications it was an act of terrorism, and his top advisers will be examining the potential security implications of the attack, which took place near a military barracks in the Woolwich area of the city.

Police Thursday confirmed the dead man was a serving soldier and said his identity will not be released yet at his family's request. They said a post-mortem examination will be conducted later Thursday.

One of the attackers went on video to explain the crime ? shouting political statements, gesturing with bloodied hands and waving a meat cleaver. Police shot and wounded the unidentified assailants and took them into custody.

British media say the victim was wearing a shirt in support of troops when he was killed.

Security has been tightened at military barracks and authorities say they are updating their guidance for military personnel.

Police in the county of Lincolnshire in eastern England said a property was being searched in connection to the attack in Woolwich. Police said a search warrant had been obtained but would not provide details about the search. Police were also scouring the attack site for further clues.

London Mayor Boris Johnson urged the people of the city to remain calm. Leaving the meeting of the emergency committee, Johnson appeared to indicate the attack was being seen as a one-off incident.

"Everything I am hearing leads me to think that Londoners can go about their business in the normal way and we are going to bring the killers to justice," he said.

Calling it "an appalling murder," Cameron earlier said there were "strong indications" it was an act of terrorism, and two other officials said there were signs the attack was motivated by radical Islam.

The incident unfolded Wednesday afternoon when officers responded to reports of an assault just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks in the neighborhood of Woolwich.

Images from the scene showed a blue car that appeared to have been used in the attack, its hood crushed and rammed into a signpost on a sidewalk that was smeared with blood. A number of weapons ? including butchers' knives, a machete and a meat cleaver ? were strewn on the street.

While there were moments of chaos ? one local primary school went into lockdown when a teacher saw the victim's body ? the scene was striking in its normalcy. Pedestrians milled about with grocery bags and shopping carts as a body lay motionless in the street ? and the attackers remained on the scene, wielding long knives.

Passers-by filmed what appeared to be one of the attackers, his hands covered in blood, making political statements about "an eye for an eye" as a body lay behind him.

Footage ? obtained by ITV news and The Sun newspaper ? showed a man in a dark jacket and knit cap walking toward a camera, clutching a meat cleaver and a knife. Speaking in English with a British accent, he apologized that women passers-by "have had to witness this" barbarity, saying that "in our land our women have to see the same."

He gave no indication what that land was as he urged people to tell the government to "bring our troops back." British troops are deployed in Afghanistan and recently supported the French-led intervention in Mali.

"We swear by almighty Allah we will never stop fighting you," the man declared. "We must fight them as they fight us." The camera then panned away to show a body lying on the ground.

The Associated Press examined the footage to verify its authenticity, cross-referencing images from the scene, aerial shots, the location of a car behind the alleged attacker and the appearance of a body and a car in the background. There was no immediate way for the AP to verify who the cameraman was.

Other images showed the second suspect clutching a long knife as he engaged in conversation with a woman who British media said tried to intervene to prevent further bloodshed.

The Daily Telegraph identified the woman as Ingrid Loyau-Kennett, 48, and said she confronted the attackers, telling them: "It is only you versus many people. You are going to lose."

Saying she wanted to stop the suspect from attacking anyone else, she asked him if he "did it" and what he wanted.

"He said: 'I killed him because he killed Muslims and I am fed up with people killing Muslims in Afghanistan. They have nothing to do there,'" she told the newspaper.

Britain has been at the heart of several terror attacks or plots in recent years, the most deadly being the 2005 rush-hour suicide bombings when 52 commuters were killed. More recently, Parviz Khan was convicted in 2008 of plotting to kidnap and behead a British Muslim soldier in Birmingham.

Some extremists have lashed out at Britain's involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. Recently, groups have also criticized Britain's assistance in the French-led mission to Mali to root out Islamic extremists in the north.

Britain's prime minister said there were "strong indications" Wednesday's attack was a terrorist incident.

"We have suffered these attacks before, we have always beaten them back," Cameron said. "We will not be cowed, we will never buckle."

Two U.K. government officials said the attack seemed to have been ideologically motivated by radical Islam, adding that the assessment was not based solely on video footage of one suspect making political statements against the British government. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the ongoing investigation.

Scotland Yard confirmed that counterterrorism officers were leading an investigation into the attack. Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said the two men had been arrested and urged Londoners to remain calm. Both men were hospitalized, one in serious condition.

Late Wednesday, riot police fanned out in Woolwich as about 50 men waving the flag of the far-right English Defense League gathered, singing nationalistic songs and shouting obscenities about the Quran.

Muslim religious groups and charities were quick to condemn the attack and urged police to calm tensions. The Muslim Council of Britain called it a "barbaric act that has no basis in Islam," adding that "no cause justifies this murder."

The barracks near where the attack took place houses a number of the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery and independent companies of the Grenadier and Coldstream Guards. They were the site of shooting events during the 2012 London Olympics.

Fred Oyat, 44, who lives in a high-rise nearby, said he heard four gun shots and went straight to the window.

"I saw one man lying there bleeding, another lying on the pavement being disarmed. A policeman was pointing a gun at him. A third man was lying further up the street. ... He was bleeding profusely," Oyat said. "There were four knives on the ground ? big kitchen knives. The knives were very bloody."

David Dixon, headmaster at a nearby primary school, said he saw a body lying in the road outside. After making sure all students were inside, he quickly put the school into lockdown. He then heard shots fired, he told the BBC.

Witnesses recounted seeing the suspects ? armed with meat cleavers and possibly a firearm ? rushing toward police when officers arrived on the scene.

"He ran towards police before they could even get out of the car," Julia Wilders told Britain's Press Association.

Graham Wilders said he saw one of the suspects pull out a handgun.

"He didn't fire the gun," Wilders told the BBC. "They went for the police with a handgun. The police were the only ones who did any shooting."
