How is persistent illness diverse from acute illness ... - No Sub Health

admin | Sep 29, 2011 | 1 comment

Are particular illnesses by nature persistent or acute, or by progression, and partake of the two labels?

What precisely does it mean diagnostically speaking (in sensible terms) to have a chronic or acute illness?

And (BQ) is it possible for one to have persistent health and acute wellness?

=D

Advanced Prostate Cancer Breakthrough? | www.dailyrx.com

The treatment options for advanced prostate cancer that's spread to the bone are minimal at this point. An experimental drug that's currently being tested may soon change the outlook for patients.

A drug that's in late-stage trials shows promise in extending the lives of patients with prostate cancer that has metastisized (spread) to the bone. The drug works by pinpointing, invading and killing bone tumors with targeted radiation.

Ask your oncologist about Alpharadin - for advanced prostate cancer patients.

Developed by Bayer and biotech firm Algeta, the drug Alpharadin is the first medication that appears to not only shrink bone tumors, but also extend survival.

This so-called "alpha pharmaceutical" targets and blasts bone tumors with radiation. It's a new type of drug containing radium that attaches to bone in a manner similar to calcium. It's a mechanism that spares healthy bone tissue.

At this point, Bayer is planning to seek U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Alpharadin by mid-2012.

Clinical trial results were presented at a recent cancer research meeting in Sweden. Alpharadin is considered a major advancement in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.

Results of any clinical trial are preliminary before they are published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Prostate Cancer

Each year in the United States, over 200,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Unfortunately, 32,000 of them will succumb to the disease, making it the third most common cause of death from cancer in men of all ages and the most common cause of death from cancer in men over age 75. However, due to improved detection and treatment, there are over 2 million men in the United States who are currently prostate cancer survivors.

The prostate is a small, walnut sized organ in men that sits below the bladder and is responsible for making seminal fluid, which is necessary for ejaculation and fertility. Symptoms of prostate cancer closely resemble those of benign prostatic hypertrophy, with delayed or slowed initiation of urination, dribbling and leaking of urine, a slow urinary stream, and incomplete emptying of the bladder. Blood may be present in the urine or semen as well. Pain in the bones of the lower back and pelvis may be a sign that prostate cancer has spread.

?

The biggest risk factors for prostate cancer are advancing age and prostate cancer in a first degree relative, such as a father or brother. African-American men are at greater risk as well. Other risk factors include alcohol abuse, a diet high in animal fat, and environmental exposures to Agent Orange, cadmium, paint fumes, farm work.

Because most of the symptoms of prostate cancer are clinically indistinguishable from BPH, further testing is often needed. In some cases, during a rectal exam, a doctor may be able to feel a hard, easily identifiable tumor through the rectum which aids diagnosis. In other cases, a rectal exam may not be able to differentiate between cancer and BPH. Concrete diagnosis is made by prostate biopsy, and the tissue is graded by a Gleason grade (1-5) to determine how abnormal the cancer is. Two different grades are often present in one biopsy, and the two samples are added together for a Gleason score (2-10) which further classifies how aggressive the cancer is. Prostate specific antigen (PSA), a protein found in the blood, may be elevated in some men that would prompt a doctor to check for prostate cancer, but it is usually not used as a sole screening method. It is better utilized as a marker of the return of cancer after treatment. The best thing a man can do to detect prostate cancer when it's in early stages and highly treatable is to have yearly rectal exams beginning at age 50, and age 40 if they have a diagnosed first degree relative.

Treatment methods are variable depending on how aggressive the cancer is and if it has spread. Early cancer contained within the walls of the prostate will usually be surgically removed by a radical prostatectomy. There is some risk of incontinence and erectile dysfunction as a result. Radiation therapy is also available for early stage cancer, in the form of implanted radioactive seeds or a focused beam. When prostate cancer has spread outside of the prostate, there is a wide array of chemotherapeutic and hormone therapy options. Prostate cancer is fueled by testosterone, so many hormonal treatments block the release of or prevent the action of it. Hormone therapy is mainly used when cancer has spread to help relieve symptoms, and there are two types. Luteinizing hormone-releasing hormones (LH-RH) agonists block the body from making testosterone. They are injected usually every 3 - 6 months and include leuprolide, goserelin, nafarelin, triptorelin, histrelin, buserelin, and degarelix. androgen-blocking drugs are often given along with the above drugs and include flutamide, bicalutamide, and nilutamide.

Security System? - Adoption.com Forums

In PA giving out FP's home address is disclosed to biofamily. This makes me a bit nervous as we are looking to take 1 FC (ages 3-8) within a 1 hour drive radius to family visits. Unfortunately, one of those towns has a higher crime rate due to drug trafficking, etc.

Also, I don't know if I should feel this way, but I'm paranoid of an FC running away. Since we have a ranch style home, it's not that difficult to see any kid opening a window, popping out a screen and just stepping onto the outside ground.

I'm not sure where they'd go... we don't have public transportation. I know that I sleep like a rock and most times won't even wake up to severe thunderstorms. DH on the otherhand may hear things, but in case he's not home... etc.

(Tried doing a search on the forum, didn't come up with anything specific in regards to this...)

Am I just being paranoid? Do you think it's a waste of money? Do you have one?

Jackson saw salvation in dangerous drug

Michael Jackson was physically exhausted from a day of grueling rehearsals for his marathon 50-night comeback tour. But his nightly battle with insomnia had just begun. After showering and getting into bed, he called for his "milk," a powerful drug he had been using to escape into unconsciousness.

Jackson saw the anesthetic known as propofol as his salvation. On June 25, 2009, it became the King of Pop's death potion.

How he overdosed in his mansion on a drug intended for hospital use is at the center of the manslaughter trial this week of the doctor he hired to be his highly paid personal physician for the "This is It" tour.

Testimony about the drug is expected to dominate the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, a Houston cardiologist who has pleaded not guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The prosecution claims Murray was grossly negligent in giving Jackson propofol at home without proper lifesaving equipment available and then left the room long enough to find his patient not breathing when he returned.

His defense team claims the singer, desperate for sleep, swallowed an additional dose of the drug when his doctor was out of the room.

Getting to the truth of it will come down to sometimes technical testimony from an array of medical experts, pathologists and even the police officers and paramedics who inspected Murray's equipment in the bedroom where Jackson went into cardiac arrest.

The defense theory, based on evidence that a trace amount of propofol ? .13 milligrams ? was found in Jackson's stomach, may be a hard sell.

The drug is administered intravenously, usually during surgery. Scientific witnesses may be asked to explain how it could have gotten into his stomach. Some doctors say ingesting it orally is almost unheard of.

"It's an odd, on-the-edge defense theory," said Dr. Gil Tepper, chief of staff at Miracle Mile Medical Center in Los Angeles. "It would not put you to sleep and it would move through the system very rapidly, causing awful diarrhea."

There are few authoritative studies and few statistics on deaths caused by the drug. It remains uncertain if the judge will allow a Chilean doctor's study of students who voluntarily drank the drug or a study of pigs who received it rectally.

The prosecution has a key expert witness, as well as forensic experts from the Los Angeles County coroner's office who are considered at the top of the field.

The defense boasts an advantage in one of its lawyers, J. Michael Flanagan, who says he is the only California attorney ever to try a propofol death case.

Flanagan represented one of a pair of nurses charged with killing a cancer patient who died after propofol was allegedly given without proper authorization by an anesthesiologist. Flanagan's client was acquitted and the other nurse pleaded no contest to a lesser charge.

Abuse of the drug is said to occur among medical professionals but rarely among patients.

In anesthesia, propofol is known as something of a wonder drug. Tepper said it's ideal for short term procedures such as colonoscopies or cataract surgery. Patients report feeling energized when they come out of it and there is no grogginess.

"But it's absolutely not recommended as a sleep aid," said Tepper. "You would never reach restful sleep and you would have to have constant monitoring."

In a hospital setting, Tepper said the doctor would have heart and blood oxygenation monitors as well as surgical equipment to do intubation if the patient stops breathing. Witnesses have said no such equipment was in Jackson's bedroom.

"It's a very dangerous drug," said Dr. Mark Schlesinger, head of anesthesiology at Hackensack University Medical Hospital in New Jersey, who said he has administered it thousands of times in his 25-year career. "The difference between unconsciousness and no longer breathing is a very slim margin of safety."

In the hands of a trained anesthesiologist, he added: "It's a wonderful drug and a very safe drug. It's not the drug that kills somebody. It's the way it is used."

Murray was not the first doctor to give Jackson the drug as a sleep aid, although others have not been publicly named.

Jackson's reliance on propofol was first disclosed to The Associated Press days after Jackson's death. Cherilyn Lee, a nurse nutritionist who treated Jackson with vitamins, said he pleaded unsuccessfully with her to get the drug he knew as Diprivan. He said his doctor told him it was safe and he described falling asleep as soon as the drug dripped from an IV into his vein.

"I said, 'Michael, the only problem with you taking this medication,' and I had a chill in my body and tears in my eyes ... , "'You're going to take it and you're not going to wake up.'"

Lee, who said she treated him from January to April 2009, is on the trial witness list. She said she never saw Jackson use other drugs.

"He wasn't looking to get high or feel good and sedated from drugs," she said. "This was a person who was not on drugs. This was a person who was seeking help, desperately, to get some sleep, to get some rest."

Murray, who had been consulted by Jackson in his Las Vegas office, was promised $150,000 a month when he signed on as Jackson's personal physician six weeks before he died. He closed the doors of his offices there and in Houston to devote himself to the singer.

An autopsy report showed that Jackson was generally healthy, indicating his key problem was insomnia. Murray has told police he administered other drugs known as benzodiazepines, which are also used as sleep aids. But when they did not work, Jackson demanded propofol.

Murray told police he was trying to wean him from the drug and gave him a minimal dosage, then left the room for five minutes to use the bathroom. However, cell phone records suggest he was making phone calls for a longer time. His actions after he found Jackson not breathing are also central to the case.

In the two years since Jackson died, doctors have been known to refer to propofol as "The Michael Jackson drug." Some fear a backlash for its use.

Dr. Lawrence Koblinksy, head of forensic science at John Jay College in New York, said the situation of a famous man demanding propofol is an anomaly and should not cast doubt on its effectiveness in hospitals.

"If you have a drug that is wonderful, just because a celebrity dies doesn't mean you take it off the market," he said.

Obama's LA campaign office vandalized

Police said Friday they are investigating what appears to be a politically motivated attack on a newly opened campaign office for President Barack Obama in Los Angeles, only days before he's scheduled to arrive in Southern California.

Several campaign staffers were in a room at the back of the office Thursday night when they heard the sound of smashing glass at the front and side of the building, said police Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

They found three front-door windows and a side glass door had been smashed.

No rocks or projectiles were found, and police believe one or more attackers used a tire iron or something similar to break the glass, Smith said.

Police notified the Secret Service and FBI officials said they are assisting Los Angeles police with the investigation to determine if the incident was motivated by hate or an act of domestic terrorism.

Katie Hogan, a spokeswoman for Obama's re-election campaign, declined comment.

The office housed in a three-story building is in the Playa Vista area on the suburban west side. Plywood boards covered the broken windows and door. It wasn't known whether staffers were going to return to work on Friday.

Obama is scheduled to visit Los Angeles on Monday to raise money for his campaign.

Knowing Your Computer Hardware | Computers and Technology

There is a personal computer in almost every home and office and yet there are still people confused about computer hardware. You can define a personal computer as a system that was built for one person to use but there come in a variety of shapes and sizes. The tower size was the most common when they first became popular, but today people are more prone to purchase a midi or mini tower to save on space. The difference in size mainly dictates the amount of bays that are available for drives and the type of motherboard that will fit into the case.

The computer contains multiple components that are placed inside to create the unit. You can have all the hardware in place, all in working order but without software, mainly an operating system you are left with a dumb computer. The operating system will manage the hardware inside the computer and determine how it is utilized and also allows the user to control the way the system operates. You may have heard the term firmware and it has been associated with computer hardware, it is not considered hardware, just a program that is embedded into the hardware itself. The firmware in the hardware can be updated to help your hardware work properly with different operating systems and other software on your computer.

The hardware is considered all parts that are inside or connected to the outside of the computer. The computer case, mouse, keyboard, monitor and speakers are considered hardware. Inside the computer you have parts such as the motherboard, CPU, memory, hard drive, ROM drives, video card, sound card, Ethernet card and power supply. The computer hardware in each system may vary by type, brand or even size but the main components are always the same in order for the system to work. If you go to purchase a bare bone system it will come complete with case, power supply, mother board and CPU, memory, video, sound and sometimes hard drive. This is the basic components to get the tower to operate; you can then add ROM drives, speakers, keyboard, and mouse and monitor to have a working dumb computer. In order to have a computer that is completely operational you have to install an operating system and the necessary drivers for the hardware to work.

Each piece of hardware in your computer is different; some will require drivers while others will not. The memory for instance requires no drivers and is simply plug_and_play and most ROM drives and hard drives act the same way. But, other hardware inside your system such as your Ethernet card, video card or sound card will require drivers to be loaded once the operating system is installed to operate correctly. Many times the operating system you use will pick up the computer hardware drivers without having you install them manually. Once you boot your system up for the first time your operating system will detect the new hardware and begin searching for the necessary drivers.

Prosecutors show grisly photos as Knox trial resumes (Reuters)

PERUGIA, Italy (Reuters) ? Italian prosecutors displayed gruesome crime scene photos on Friday in an attempt to keep American student Amanda Knox in jail for the murder of her British housemate during an alleged drug-fueled sex game.

The courtroom in the central Italian town of Perugia was packed for the final stages of Knox's appeal trial in a sensational case that has grabbed headlines in Italy, Britain and the United States.

Knox, 24, looked pale and nervous as she was ushered into a courtroom besieged by television cameras and curious onlookers in the historic university town where Meredith Kercher's half-naked body was found in a pool of blood in 2007.

Knox, who has been in jail for nearly four years, including the period before her first trial, was sentenced in 2009 to 26 years in prison and her Italian ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito to 25 years for the murder.

Both say they are innocent, and maintain they were together at Sollecito's apartment the night of the murder.

Knox listened impassively as prosecutors began closing arguments by trying to take the focus off a forensic report that bolstered the Seattle native's case and implored the court not to be swayed by relentless media coverage of the saga.

"When you decide, I want you all to feel a bit like the parents of Meredith Kercher, a quiet and serious young woman whose life was cut short by these good kids from good families," prosecutor Giancarlo Costagliola told the court.

"There has been an almost obsessive media campaign from the press and television that has made all viewers feel a bit like the parents of Amanda and Raffaele, two youths from good families held in prison because of a dogged prosecution."

Knox's hopes of release were given a strong boost by an independent forensic report earlier this year that cast major doubt on DNA evidence used to convict her, and also cited bungling by police scientists.

But prosecutors rejected the conclusions of the forensic experts. The prosecution maintains DNA traces of Knox and Kercher were found on a knife identified as the murder weapon and that Sollecito's DNA was found on Kercher's bra clasp.

Even if the evidence on the knife and bra clasp was ignored, there was plenty else -- from Knox falsely accusing a Congolese-born bar owner to suspect footprints -- that pointed to her and Sollecito's guilt, prosecutors argued.

Reminding the panel of professional and lay judges of the gory crime, prosecutors showed pictures from the scene, including those of Kercher's wounds, after sending journalists and the public out of the courtroom.

Knox's stepfather, Chris Mellas, said Kercher's parents would have been horrified at the grisly photo display. "Showing those pictures today was absolutely pointless, it was like playing the emotional card or something, but it was unfortunate they had to be shown at all," Mellas told Reuters.

"DAILY STRUGGLE"

Prosecutors also showed a photo of Knox kissing Sollecito outside the house where the murder was committed, prompting her lawyer to object.

Prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, who has led the investigations into the murder from the beginning, at one point suggested Knox and her lawyers had used slander tactics similar to those used by Nazis in the 1930s.

Friday's hearing began with a rare appearance by Perugia's chief prosecutor to express support for the case against Knox.

A verdict is expected in the first few days of October after concluding arguments from both prosecution and defense, four years after the murder stunned Italy and shook Perugia's image as an idyllic student town in the Umbrian hills.

Knox's fresh-faced good looks and the gory sex-and-blood twists and turns in the case have riveted audiences in the United States, where Knox has been viewed by many as a victim of blundering Italian police and an unreliable justice system.

"Every day is a struggle for her, every day that she is locked up is horrible," said Knox's mother, Edda Mellas. "The appeal has gone great, you know, and that's great, but today you get to hear all the lies."

Others have portrayed the 24-year-old -- dubbed "Foxy Knoxy" in the press -- as a marijuana-smoking party girl who shopped for lingerie with her boyfriend days after the murder.

Knox has since become the subject of several novels and her story has even been made into a movie for U.S. television starring Hayden Panettiere, though lawyers for both Knox and the victim's family have tried to stop it.

If acquitted, both Knox and her ex-boyfriend would be freed immediately, said Carlo Fiorio, a professor of criminal procedure at the University of Perugia. They could also have their sentences confirmed, shortened or lengthened, he said.

Rudy Guede, an Ivorian drifter with a criminal record, was also sentenced in October 2008 to 30 years in jail for taking part in Kercher's murder, but that term was cut back to 16 years by an appeals court.

Ex-officials: Iran nuclear effort hit by sabotage (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Iran's star-crossed nuclear and energy programs have suffered a rash of setbacks, mishaps and catastrophes in the past two years.

Assassins killed three scientists with links to Iran's nuclear programs. The Stuxnet computer worm that famously infected computers worldwide zeroed in on a single target in Iran, devices that can make weapons-usable uranium. Dozens of unexplained explosions hit the country's gas pipelines, and Iran's first nuclear power plant suffered major equipment failures as technicians struggle to bring it online.

Has Iran just been unlucky? Probably not.

The chief of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Fereidoun Abbasi, heatedly told journalists at a meeting in Vienna last week that the United States was supporting an Israeli assassination campaign against his scientists. His emotional comments came almost a year after motorcyclists attached a bomb to the door of his car in Tehran. He and his wife barely escaped with their lives.

As for the three slayings, Iranian President Ahmadinejad told The Associated Press on Friday that the killers had been caught and confessed to being "trained in the occupied lands by the Zionists." He accused the International Atomic Energy Agency of being under the control of the U.S. and said the watchdog agency had "illegally and unethically" released the names of Iran's nuclear researchers, making them targets.

While Israel and Britain won't discuss Iran's charges, the U.S. has denied any role in the slayings.

"We condemn any assassination or attack on a person ? on an innocent person," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said after the latest killing in July. "We were not involved."

Former U.S. officials point out that assassinations are outlawed by the U.S., which condones drone strikes against terrorists as acts of war against combatants.

Yet there is little doubt that the Obama administration is pursuing a program of high-tech sabotage to disrupt Tehran's suspected weapons-related nuclear efforts.

"I have no doubt that the U.S. and other countries were behind industrial sabotage aimed at the program of concern," said Mark Fitzpatrick, a former State Department official, referring to Iran's nuclear program.

Tehran said it is pursuing nuclear technology for peaceful purposes. International inspectors said Iran has refused to explain suspected weapons work since 2008. Meanwhile, the U.S. and other countries accuse Iran of making all the necessary preparations to build a nuclear arsenal.

Publicly, the Obama administration has pushed for tougher sanctions and further diplomatic isolation to pressure Iran to abandon weapons-related work. At the same time, former officials said, the U.S. and its allies have secretly ramped up covert actions aimed at slowing Iran's nuclear progress toward a bomb.

"As Iran moves closer to being able to produce a nuclear weapon, concerned countries are increasingly concentrating on ways to prevent it from being able to cross that line," said Fitzpatrick, now at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.

Ex-officials said the U.S. has been careful to target only those facilities suspected of playing a role in weapons work and avoid casualties or other collateral damage.

One former senior intelligence official said that the U.S. considered a scheme to use a burst of electromagnetic energy to knock out power to one suspected Iranian weapons-related site but rejected the plan because of the risk of causing a widespread power outage. The former official would only speak about classified matters on condition of anonymity.

The suspected sabotage campaign is widely seen as an alternative to military confrontation with Iran, which some experts say could have disastrous consequences for the Middle East.

A secret January 2010 U.S. diplomatic memorandum published by the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy organization quoted a German government official as saying that a program of "covert sabotage" against Iran, including explosions, computer hacking and engineered accidents, "would be more effective than a military strike whose effects in the region could be devastating." The memo did not cite any specifics.

While the fact is rarely discussed, the U.S. may be the world's leader in the dark art of high-tech industrial sabotage.

According to an official CIA history, the Reagan administration was convinced that the Soviet Union was engaged in the wholesale theft of Western technological secrets. It arranged for the shipment of doctored computer chips, turbines and blueprints to the U.S.S.R. that disrupted production at chemical plants and a tractor factory. When the KGB obtained plans for NASA's Space Shuttle, the CIA said it made certain it was for a rejected design.

A former member of the National Security Council in the Reagan administration, Thomas C. Reed, wrote in his 2004 book that during the Cold War the CIA tampered with the computer code embedded in Canadian components of a new trans-Siberian gas pipeline system. In 1982, a surge in pressure caused a three-megaton blast in the Siberian forest visible from space.

The U.S. doesn't regard Iran as an innocent victim. Washington has accused Tehran of sponsoring terrorist groups in Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, of sending arms to the Taliban in Afghanistan and aiding al-Qaida's leadership in Pakistan. The U.S.-supported Iran Human Rights Documentation Center has said that Iranian intelligence agents have killed more than 160 expatriate political activists abroad.

"We've been in a contest with the Iranians now for 30 years, and this is just one phase of it," said James Lewis, a former State Department official and an expert on technology and security. "The Iranians do things that appeal to them, and they are noisy and physical and explosive."

The U.S., he said, has preferred quieter methods that leave few fingerprints. "If I was Iran, I would wonder if my stuff would work," Lewis said.

The U.S. and its allies have avoided discussing the suspected sabotage campaign publicly. At least until recently, Iran has seldom raised the issue and even then has provided few details.

For both sides, the most sensitive issue is the question of who is killing Iran's nuclear scientists.

Reuel Marc Gerecht, a former CIA officer now at the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies think tank, said a faction within Iran's government might have ordered the assassinations. He said one researcher supported Iran's persecuted opposition, while the others may have been suspected of spying for the West.

Other former officials and diplomats said the killings appear to be an effort by Iran's adversaries to disrupt its nuclear weapons-related work.

Several warned that targeted killings can backfire if they were to inspire surviving engineers and scientists to work harder, or if Iran were to retaliate by targeting Western scientists. They also questioned whether assassinating a few researchers could slow such a large program.

"If the state and progress of the Iranian nuclear program depends on what is walking around inside the heads of one or two key officials, then we've got a lot less to worry about this program than most of the discourse would lead us to believe," said Paul Pillar, a former CIA national intelligence officer for the Near East and South Asia.

Former officials and experts generally agree that the Stuxnet worm was an effort to sabotage Iran's uranium enrichment centrifuges, which can be used to make fuel for reactors or weapons-usable material for atomic bombs. Western experts estimate that the malware destroyed 1,000 centrifuges at Iran's Natanz plant last year.

Some former U.S. officials said that Israel's Unit 8200, the Defense Force's electronic intelligence service, probably led the development of Stuxnet, with the help of the U.S. and perhaps other nations. Others said they suspected the U.S. was the chief developer of what has been called the world's first cyberweapon of mass destruction.

German Stuxnet expert Ralph Langner said in a speech this spring that such advanced software must have been created by what he called a cybersuperpower. "There is only one," said Langner. "And that is the United States."

Art Keller, a retired CIA officer who worked in the Middle East and South Asia, said Stuxnet's self-destruct mechanism, its painstaking focus on a single target and other fail-safe features all suggest the program was vetted by U.S. government lawyers concerned about limiting collateral damage.

"These are all the hallmarks of a U.S. covert action," he said.

Insiders are divided on whether the West has conducted sabotage operations against Iran's oil and gas pipeline networks.

Fitzpatrick, the former State Department nonproliferation expert, said U.S. and U.N. sanctions have cut off Iran's supply of replacement parts and forced it to manufacture crude knockoffs that frequently fail. "Only in that sense can one say with certainty that the West is responsible" for the country's refinery and pipeline blasts, he said.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant suffered a rash of equipment malfunctions over the past year, including the failure of one of the plant's emergency cooling pumps and flaws found in two bearings on one of the plant's huge turbines.

Former U.S. officials said that Iran's agreement to buy fuel for Bushehr from Russia and to return the plutonium-bearing spent fuel back to Russia for reprocessing eased concerns the plant could be used as part of a nuclear weapons effort. They doubted there was any U.S. interest in disrupting its operations.

Russian engineer Alexander Bolgarov, who spent two years working on the Iranian plant, told The Associated Press in an interview last month that Stuxnet had no effect on Bushehr, despite media reports.

Bolgarov said he saw no other evidence of sabotage, either. Instead, he blamed Bushehr's construction problems and breakdowns on inexperienced workers, poor oversight and overlapping Russian and Iranian bureaucracies.

Sometimes an accident is just an accident, even in Iran.

Google spurns Oracle $2.2 billion Android damage claim (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Google Inc urged a federal judge to reject an Oracle Corp expert's recommendation that it pay more than $2.2 billion for infringing patents for Java technology used in the Android operating system.

U.S. District Judge William Alsup in San Francisco had on July 22 rejected Oracle's request for as much as $6.1 billion of damages, but gave the company a chance to revise its claim. A trial is scheduled to begin next month.

Oracle had sued Google in August 2010, claiming that the Internet search company's Android system infringed Java patents that Oracle acquired when it bought Sun Microsystems Inc seven months earlier. It also alleged copyright infringement.

The lawsuit is one of several among phone and software companies seeking a greater share of profits in the growing market for smartphones and tablets.

In a Tuesday letter to the judge, Google lawyer Robert Van Nest said a new report by Oracle damages expert Iain Cockburn recommended damages of more than $2 billion for copyright infringement, including $1.2 billion for unjust enrichment in 2012 alone, and $201.8 million for patent infringement.

Van Nest said the September 12 report is deficient because Cockburn either speculated about or did not explain how he calculated damages, and failed to show how much revenue Sun or Oracle might have earned by partnering with Google on Android.

The report "ignores governing law and the guidelines in this court's July 22, 2011 order," Van Nest concluded.

Google plans to ask Alsup to exclude portions of Cockburn's findings from the case. A Google spokesman called the revised damages estimate "flawed."

Oracle spokeswoman Deborah Hellinger declined to comment. Cockburn, a Boston University management professor, did not respond to requests for comment.

In the July 22 order, Alsup faulted Google for trying to downplay the value of Android, and use its 2006 talks with Sun regarding a lower-cost Java license as a basis to limit Oracle's damages to a fraction of what it seeks.

But he scolded Cockburn for having "overreached" in an earlier report by assuming the entire value of Android was tied to Oracle's patents, rather than only parts alleged to infringe those patents. He urged that any revised report be more specific, and threatened to exclude it altogether if it "fails to measure up in any substantial and unseverable way."

Alsup suggested that $100 million should be a "starting point" to help determine damages, before adjusting for several changes in the marketplace since the Sun license talks.

Google is based in Mountain View, California, and Oracle in nearby Redwood City.

The case in Oracle America Inc v. Google Inc, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 10-03561.

A look at the acidic oceans in our future

The underwater volcanoes off a tiny Italian island are helping scientists peer into the future of a world altered by increasing amounts of carbon dioxide emitted into the air and absorbed into the oceans.

The waters just off the island of Ischia mirror the projected conditions of the Earth's oceans at the beginning of the next century because the volcanic vents found there infuse the water with large helpings of carbon dioxide, or CO2, which turns seawater acidic.

Research has shown that the growing acidic conditions are harmful to some sea creatures ? those that build their protective shells with calcium are increasingly prevented from doing so the more acidic waters become.

The fates of these creatures and the stability of the ocean food chain are a major concern over the next century and beyond because of the carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere by humans, as the oceans absorb about 30 percent of this carbon dioxide.

"One part of climate change that is indisputable is that CO2 is rising in the atmosphere ? it's easy to measure," said Bill Chadwick, an Oregon State University geologist. "And it's indisputable that it is making the oceans more acidic ? we can measure it."

Kristy Kroeker, lead author on a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, used the volcanic vents off Ischia to see just what effects acidic waters had on the makeup of marine life communities.

Natural laboratory
Undersea volcanoes around the world release CO2, Chadwick, who was not a part of Kroeker's study, said.

"It's a little bit of a natural laboratory for the effects of ocean acidification from atmospheric CO2 ? the CO2 that we're pumping out from burning hydrocarbons," Chadwick told OurAmazingPlanet.

Most undersea volcanoes spew out superheated water and sulfur, along with carbon dioxide ? this mixture creates some extreme living conditions and extreme creatures. In contrast, Ischia's volcanic vents are relatively gentle.

"This releases primarily carbon dioxide. There's no temperature change, and no sulfur," Kroeker said, "so you can look at the effects of the carbon dioxide itself."

Kroeker compared being in the waters around these vents to "swimming though a Jacuzzi or a glass of champagne. There are little bubbles coming out of the ground all around you."

Just about 100 yards from shore, and in waters 6 to 15 feet deep, the volcanic vents create an underwater landscape that transitions from normal pH (8.1) to pH levels projected to arrive by the year 2100 (7.8), to highly acidic conditions (in the highs 6s and low 7s).

Acid test
Although there is plenty of research on the nasty toll acidic water takes on shell-building animals, Kroeker's research is some of the first to examine how increasingly acidic water affects underwater communities as a whole.

As expected, Kroeker found that as pH decreased (and water got more acidic), the local populations changed. The more acidic the waters, the less variety seen in communities of sea creatures.

"Even though there were the same number of animals in these zones, the animals were very different," Kroeker said. Tiny crustaceans and brown and green algae thrived in the most acidic environments, while larger creatures were absent. "You're losing these bigger organisms that are the size of a peanut M&M and replacing them with organisms the size of a rice grain," Kroeker said.

Although scientists don't expect the world's oceans will ever likely be as acidic as the most extreme environments she studied, Kroeker said the research shows the spectrum of biological responses that acidification triggers.

"You can see it," she said. Vibrant pink and orange algae, bright sea urchins and crawling snails in normal waters were replaced by fewer creatures in the 7.8 pH zone, and, in the extreme acid waters, by a seemingly barren landscape of browns and greens.

However, Kroeker did find that some snails ? shell-building creatures ? were living in the 7.8 acidity zone.

"It is encouraging," she said. "It shows there is some ability for some of these calcified organisms to survive, but it brings up a lot of questions about why they are able to survive," Kroeker said.

Kroeker said that although her work demonstrated some of the changes wrought by ocean acidification on small creatures, there's reason to think those changes could have far-reaching effects up the food chain.

It's not just about snails or sea urchins or tiny crustaceans, she said, it's about the way changes in their numbers could affect the larger creatures that eat them ? including humans.

Review Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 | Audio Visual Junkie

Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 review

The Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 is my latest baby. I purchased it earlier this month as a replacement for my aging desktop computer. I purchased it at a computer shop in SM Mall of Asia. I had the memory upgraded from 2GB to 4GB bringing the total cost close to thirty thousand Philippine pesos. It came with an Intel Core i5 processor, an Intel HD 3000 graphics card, and a 500GB hard disk drive.

Mobile computing: past vs present

Five years ago I would never have considered purchasing a laptop computer. However, rapid progress in mobile communications and decline in the price of quality machines has made laptop computers an attractive investment. Computing power has advanced in such a way that it is no longer necessary to have the latest and greatest machine in order to run most day-to-day applications.

There I was, all set to purchase a new laptop computer. The only question was: which one?

One factor to rule them all

As a consumer, the single most important factor for me was value for money. I wanted something that meets my needs at a price that wouldn?t break my wallet.

The Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 is very competitively priced. At less than 30 thousand pesos, it is among the cheapest Core i5 notebook computers in the market. I could have gotten myself a faster machine for the same price, but that would mean resorting to brands that are not too well known. For a purchase at this amount I wanted a reliable brand with well established customer support. Fujitsu has been around long enough to build a solid reputation.

So, it was within my budget. But will I be getting value for it?

Elegant simplicity

I will be carrying this around, so I wanted something that looks good. The matte black plain finish in the LH531 is accentuated by an elegant chrome frame. There are red and pink versions, but I wanted something inconspicuous so the matte black one works well for me.

For its size the LH531 is surprisingly light at 2.1 kilograms. The battery lasts up 6.5 hours and can easily be removed, which makes it even lighter. If I wanted to go lighter I will need to get a netbook, which lacks the computing power that I need.

Built for speed and power

Speaking of computing power, this baby is fast! My heaviest use includes running applications like Microsoft Word, Google Chrome, Firefox, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator simultaneously. This did not even come close to utilizing half of the Core i5?s potential.

The few 3D games that I tried ran smoothly. I will not expect it to run the latest and greatest 3D games at the highest graphical settings, but the Intel 3000 HD graphics card is no slouch in delivering crisp, smooth graphics.

Superb display

I like to watch movies and television series on my laptop, so I appreciate the LED display on the Lifebook LH531. It runs at a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. While this may not be true HD, I find that most of the stuff that I watch on my laptop are do not go beyond it anyway. I am perfectly content with watching 720p (1280 x 720 pixels) videos on my computer screen, since I?m sitting pretty close to it anyway. If I wanted to watch 1080p Blu-ray movies I would do it on the television.

Bells and whistles that count

One issue that I have with keyboards is food spillage. I like to eat while using the computer. The spill resistant keyboard supposedly handles this well. I have taken extra care not to spill stuff on it, but should the time come I am confident that it will be easy to clean. The chiclet type keyboard is soft and easy to touch. The keyboard layout is slightly different from what I am used to, but I was able to adjust to it with relative ease.

The LH531 comes with four USB 2.0 ports which I absolutely love as it makes copying huge files a breeze. One of the ports is used only for charging, which is a nice touch. I use it a lot when charging my phone and iPod. The headset and microphone port is placed in front. I would have preferred if it were placed on the side. It also comes with a Kensington lock slot, which for me is very important in securing a mobile device such as this.

Final thoughts

The Fujitsu Lifebook LH531 delivers value through its powerful processor, crisp graphical display, and sleek mobile design that comes with all the necessities of a modern mobile computing machine.

Bird Cages ? 5 Guidelines About Selecting The Right Bird Cage ...

Beautiful Bird Cages

You need to fully understand precisely what you are interested in when choosing bird cages. It is certainly an essential choice for the well-being of the birds. The bird cage will be home for much of your bird?s lifetime, so any cage should really be a secure and safe location for birds, in addition to a comfy space to play and sleep.

If you are new to bird keeping, the variety of options, materials used, styles and dimensions can be extremely confusing, even bewildering, so these are some important points to be taken into account when buying bird cages:

Buy the biggest bird cage you possibly can

The most common mistake when buying any bird cage is choosing one that is far too small. Buy the biggest cage you can find the money for for the comfort and well-being of the birds. There are bare minimum cage size specifications for different bird varieties and if you want to keep several birds the cage sizing must be proportionately more substantial.

Bar space is critical

In addition to the cage size, the actual bar space and width are vital for the bird?s safety. Too huge bar space and they could possibly get their heads trapped between the bars and even escape; also small and they are able to get feet, beaks or wings trapped and cause injury. Also the thickness is very important. For smallish birds a narrow width wire will be adequate. However the bigger the bird, the bigger and stronger the wire have to be so that you can avoid the bars becoming bent as well as broken.

Keep your birds in the correct shape

Buying a bird cage of the proper shape is significant for the health of your birds. Round cages should be definitely avoided in general since this can cause confusion and psychological disorders in most birds. Rectangular cages are ideal and, for most birds, breadth is more crucial than height. This is certainly relevant for smaller birds such as parakeets, finches and also canaries as they often fly from side to side in the cage letting them exercise.

The bird cage needs to be simple to clean

Cleanliness of the birds also needs to be a key factor when selecting the bird cage for your feathered pals. The bird cage needs to have easy access to clean, ideally simply because birds are sloppy critters. Thus select a cage exactly where your hand can certainly reach straight into each place. Bird cages with wider doors as well as the ones possessing trays that may be readily taken off are the best choices.

Safety is vital

The most important key to consider when purchasing bird cages is safety. The materials that the bird cage is made, virtually any sharp sides or ends, use of plastics and paints are all factors which can influence the safety of the bird.

Cages should be constructed from stainless steel wire or painted with non-toxic paint and oven-baked to generate a tough surface. Plastic coated wire is absolutely not advised. Soft or breakable plastics can be simply broken and ingested easily by birds. If the cage bars are welded , these should be robust enough to stop breakage by your bird and just about any cut edges should be smoothed and well finished in order to avoid injury.

Generally you receive what you pay for when purchasing a bird cage, so expect inexpensive bird cages to never last as long as a higher priced one. However you will find some web merchants where you can get outstanding high quality bird cages for sale at affordable prices.
