Fever During Pregnancy May Raise Odds for Autism in Offspring

But experts say taking fever-relieving meds cuts the risk.

TUESDAY, May 29 (HealthDay News) ? Women who develop fevers while pregnant may be more than twice as likely to have a child with autism spectrum disorder or another developmental delay, a new study suggests.

Exactly how, or even if, fevers may increase the risk for autism is unknown, and experts were quick to say women should not panic if they do develop a fever while pregnant because taking fever-reducing medications cuts the risk.

One in 88 children in the United States has an autism spectrum disorder, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This is an umbrella term for developmental disorders that can range from mild to severe and that often affect social and communication skills. Little is known about what causes autism or precisely why rates seem to be increasing.

Researchers from the University of California, Davis asked the moms of about 1,100 kids with and without autism spectrum disorder or other developmental delays whether they had the flu or fever during their pregnancies and if they took any medications to treat these illnesses. Their findings were published online in the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

According to the new data, moms who had a fever from any cause during pregnancy were more than twice as likely to have a child with autism or another developmental delay, when compared with moms who did not run fever during pregnancy. Moms who had the flu during pregnancy were not at greater risk for having children with autism or another developmental delay.

What?s more, moms who took fever-reducing medication during pregnancy had similar risks as those moms who did not run a fever during their pregnancy.

?Our study provides strong evidence that controlling fevers while pregnant may be effective in modifying the risk of having a child with autism or developmental delay,? study author Dr. Ousseny Zerbo, a postdoctoral researcher with Kaiser Permanente?s Northern California Division of Research in Oakland, Calif., said in a university news release. Zerbo was a doctoral candidate with UC Davis when the study was conducted. ?We recommend that pregnant women who develop fever take anti-[fever] medications and seek medical attention if their fever persists.?

The findings are culled from the Childhood Autism Risks from Genetics and Environment (CHARGE) study. This is the same dataset that recently led to a report that moms who are obese or have diabetes may be at higher risk for having children with autism. The common denominator between diabetes, obesity and fever is inflammation.

?This study puts the spotlight on inflammatory factors as a possible role in autism,? said Dr. Y. Jane Tavyev, director of pediatric neurology at pediatric services at Cedars Sinai in Los Angeles. But, she added, ?I don?t think that this should make people panic about getting sick during pregnancy. Mounting a fever is part of the body?s immune response to help kill bacteria and viruses.?

Dr. Daniel Coury, a professor of clinical pediatrics and psychiatry at Ohio State University and Nationwide Children?s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, urges caution in interpreting the new findings. ?It is an association, and doesn?t mean that maternal fever causes autism, just that we see these two occurring together more frequently than other things.?

Alycia Halladay, director of research for environmental sciences at Autism Speaks, said that ?this new report from the CHARGE study adds another piece to the puzzle around environmental risk factors in the causes of autism spectrum disorder. Further studies are needed to interpret how these many risk factors are related to each other and to an autism spectrum dissected diagnosis. This includes how genes interact with these risk factors, and whether some of the risk factors act together to modify risk.?

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) ? The setup of the 17-country euro currency union is unsustainable, the head of the European Central Bank has told EU leaders, warning they must quickly come up with a broad vision for the future to get the bloc through the current financial crisis.

Mario Draghi said Thursday that the crisis had exposed the inadequacy of the financial and economic framework set up for the euro monetary union launched in 1999.

"That configuration that we had with us by and large for ten years which was considered sustainable, I should add, in a perhaps myopic way, has been shown to be unsustainable unless further steps are taken," he said in response to questions in the European Parliament.

Draghi said the central bank had done what it could to fight the 2 ?-year-old debt crisis by reducing interest rates and giving ?1 trillion ($1.2 trillion) in emergency loans to banks. But it was now up to governments to chart a course ahead by reducing deficits, carrying out sweeping reforms to spur growth and by strengthening the euro's basic institutions. The ECB cannot "fill the vacuum of the lack of action by national governments" in those areas.

He said the next step "is for our leaders to clarify what is the vision ... what is the euro going to look like a certain number of years from now. The sooner this has been specified, the better it is."

In 1989, for example, European Commission President Jacques Delors presented a landmark report that charted the initial path to the creation and launch of the euro a decade later and laid out the goals to be achieved. "The same thing should be done now," Draghi said.

He likened Europe's current struggles to those of a person crossing a river in thick fog while struggling against a strong current.

"He or she continues fighting but does not see the other side because it is foggy. What we are asking is, to dispel this fog," he said.

The euro was set up as a single currency with one central bank, the ECB, to issue the currency and set interest rates. But the different national governments continued to independently determine their budgets and manage their widely different economies. The currency union was unable to prevent some countries from running up unsustainable debt burdens as their economies lagged behind with excessive business costs and economic imbalances such as trade deficits.

European officials have worked to strengthen rules against piling up debt and to tighten surveillance over countries' budgets and economies. More wide-ranging measures ? such as a common finance ministry or shared borrowing through so-called Eurobonds ? have not found agreement.

Draghi said one first step would be to impose tighter central control over banks through a banking regulator that could force banks to restructure and take over the burden of bailing them out. The European Commission announced plans for such a "banking union" on Thursday.

Banks have been a key part of the government debt crisis. Bank bailouts are a further burden on financially shaky governments, and weak government finances in turn hurt the banks that hold those governments' bonds.

Currently, most powers to regulate banks have been left with national authorities, who have been seen as protective of their domestic financial services industries. The EU's existing regional regulator, the European Banking Authority, has limited powers.

Draghi said bailouts for Bankia in Spain, and before that Dexia in Belgium, show that national regulators are reluctant to admit the extent of troubles at home. That only has the effect of raising the end costs of rescuing the banks and undermining trust and transparency, he said.

"What Dexia shows ? and Bankia shows as well ? is that whenever we are confronted with the dramatic need to recapitalize, if you look back, the reaction of the national supervisors... is to underestimate the problem, then come out with a first assessment, a second, a third, fourth. "

"That is the worst possible way of doing things, because everybody ends up doing the right thing but at the highest possible cost and price," Draghi said in testimony in the European Parliament in Brussels.

Spain said last Friday it would need to put ?19 billion ($23.63 billion) into Bankia to rescue it from losses on real estate loans. The company made a successful stock market flotation only last year but has since had to restate earnings and has been taken over by the government. Dexia was bailed out in October by France, Belgium Luxembourg. It was the second time the bank has needed help, as it was bailed out for ?6.4 billion in 2008.

2012 U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team qualifiers Laura Bennett and Manuel Huerta highlight a field of more than 70 international athletes set to compete Saturday at the Dallas ITU Pan American Cup.

The draft-legal Olympic-distance race (1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bike, 10-kilometer run) will feature nearly 40 Americans competing on their home soil. The women will race at noon, followed by the men at 2:45 p.m.

On the women?s side, Bennett (Boulder, Colo.) returns to ITU action for the first time since recording her first career World Triathlon Series podium finish and punching her ticket to London at the May 11 ITU World Triathlon San Diego. She swam collegiately in the Dallas area at Southern Methodist University.

Additionally, 2011 USA Triathlon Rookie of the Year Kelly Whitley (Colorado Springs, Colo.) of the Elite Triathlon Academy and 2011 USA Triathlon Under-23 Athlete of the Year Kaitlin Shiver (Melbourne, Fla.) are slated to race after making their ITU World Triathlon Series debuts in San Diego.

On the men?s side, Huerta (Miami, Fla.) will race for the first time since qualifying for the London Games with a ninth-place finish at the May 12 ITU World Triathlon San Diego. Joining Huerta in the men?s field is Kevin Collington (Orlando, Fla.), who owns a pair of top-five Pan American Cup finishes in 2012, and USA Triathlon Project 2016 program member Joe Maloy (Wildwood Crest, N.J.)

Reigning ITU Junior World Champion Lukas Verzbicas (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Elite Triathlon Academy teammates Kevin McDowell (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Ryan Bice (Colorado Springs, Colo.) also will compete.

A handful of athletes with Dallas-area ties are slated to compete, including 2012 Elite Duathlon National Champion D?Ann Arthur (Dallas, Texas), the husband-and-wife tandem of Barrett and Lauren Brandon (Fort Worth, Texas) and rising star William Huffman (Colleyville, Texas).

In addition to the ITU Pan American Cup, Dallas also hosts the PlayTri Youth F1 (ages 12-16) and Elite Development Races (ages 16-23) Saturday morning. These sprint-distance events are designed to provide top up-and-coming triathletes with draft-legal racing experience. Action begins at 7 a.m. with the women?s Elite Development Race.

Typhoon Sanvu had a bad weekend. It went from Typhoon status on May 25 to an extra-tropical storm and finally into a remnant low pressure area by May 29, 2012.

NASA's Aqua satellite captured an infrared image of Typhoon Sanvu on May 25 at 1559 UTC (11:59 a.m. EDT) when Sanvu was around its peak. The image clearly showed a visible eye surrounded by strong thunderstorms with high, cold cloud top temperatures. Those cloud-top temperatures were colder than -63 Fahrenheit (-52 Celsius) indicating they were high in the troposphere. Those strong storms were generating rainfall rates of more than 1 inch (25.4 mm) per hour.

A visible image of Typhoon Sanvu was taken from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument onboard NASA's Terra satellite on May 26, 2012 at 0130 UTC (May 25 at 9:30 p.m. U.S./EDT). By that time Sanvu had weakened as it moved into cooler sea surface temperatures and its eye was no longer visible.

Sanvu ran into much cooler ocean temperatures and wind shear that quickly weakened it over the May 27-28 weekend. On May 27, Tropical Storm Sanvu passed Chichi Jima and entered the open waters of the Pacific. At 5 a.m. EDT on May 27, Sanvu was about 245 miles east of Chichi Jima island, Japan and moving east-northeast at 15 knots (17.2 mph/27.8 kph).

Wind shear was pushing most of the rainfall to the northeast of the center and weakening the storm, as was seen in a satellite image from NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. It was on May 27, that the final warning on Sanvu was issued the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.

Asia stocks rise amid hopes for China stimulus

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets moved higher after a choppy start Tuesday as hopes for new measures to boost China's economy outweighed worries about the health of Spanish banks and their potential to worsen Europe's debt crisis.

Concerns about Spain's banks have grown since Bankia, the country's fourth-largest lender, said Friday it needed ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) in state aid to shore itself up against bad loans ? largely from real estate gone sour.

That magnified fears of a possible debt implosion in Europe's weaker economies ? starting with Greece, which will run out of money in the coming days without an emergency loan.

But analysts said investors were emboldened to scoop up oversold shares because of hopes that China is on the verge of taking action to shore up its fatigued economy.

Stan Shamu, market strategist at IG Markets in Melbourne, said there are increasing expectations that China will relax monetary policy and also announce fiscal stimulus measures.

"This has been a predominant theme since Premier Wen Jiabao's comments showing commitment to keep China's growth from stalling," he said.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 0.2 percent to 8,610.89 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng gained 0.5 percent to 18,899.61.

South Korea's Kospi added 1.3 percent to 1,848.96 after being closed Monday for a public holiday. Benchmarks in Singapore, Taiwan and mainland China also rose. Indonesia's fell.

The speeding car rear-ended one of BYD's 300 e6 taxis in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, raising fears about the safety of electric cars.

Steve Man, an auto analyst at Nomura in Hong Kong, said it appeared to be an isolated incident because the electric taxis have been running mostly without problems since they hit the streets of Shenzhen about two years ago.

Japan's Renesas Electronics Corp. plunged 18 percent amid speculation it will announce massive job cuts as its business struggles. The semiconductor maker Monday announced a deal to work with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to produce chips in an effort to cut costs.

Later Tuesday, Wall Street will reopen after a public holiday. Traders will also digest monthly data on German inflation and U.S. consumer confidence.

Benchmark oil for July delivery was up 36 cents to $91.22 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 20 cents at $90.86 on Friday, the last day it settled in New York.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.2535 from $1.2518 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 79.50 yen from 79.66 yen.

Facebook's IPO and the drama that followed has been this week's biggest news. The world's largest social networking service, which is quickly approaching its billionth registered member milestone, saw its shares debut at $38 before going through what can only be described as a fairly rocky journey over the next four days.

Facebook's shares currently trade at $31.80, a whopping 16.67 per cent off the top value, and according to Google Finance is on a downward trend. The company is currently valued at $68.11 billion, significantly less than the $104 billion figure quoted just before it went public.

After all the pre-IPO excitement, what happened afterwards has raised a few questions about Facebook as a business overall.

First, there are signs that advertising on Facebook is not performing as well as initially thought. US car giant GM pulled out of a $10 million deal with Facebook because, as the global CMO told the Wall Street Journal, paid ads on Facebook simply don't work (although the company still spends close to $90,000 a day - around ?50,000 - on content produced for the site). Other companies seem to agree too. GM's rivals like Hyundai, Kia, Nissan all but echoed GM's concerns about the return on investment associated with Facebook advertising. Ryan Holiday, an online media buyer for American Apparel, all but pulled out of the Facebook advertising programme, cutting his spending on the site from nearly $1 million per year to "a few thousand dollars a month".

Then, there are the rather humbling steps that Facebook had to take as it settled claims in a lawsuit over sponsored stories, where the social network used the names, photos and identities of users to advertise products without their express permission. Given that there are nearly 157 million registered Facebook users in the US (about half the total population), a class action lawsuit could have proved to be devastating for Facebook's attempts to challenge Google in the advertising market.

And last but not least, Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriting financial institution in Facebook's IPO has been hit by a subpoena "in connection with the analyst's discussion with certain institutional investors about the revenue prospects for Facebook". It looks like Morgan Stanley abruptly cut its revenue forecasts for Facebook just days before the company went public. Xbox 720 arriving in November 2013?

For the second time in three months, a rumour has surfaced that puts the release of the Xbox 720 otherwise nicknamed Durango, at the end of 2013, most possibly November. The latest rumour revolves around a contract that was leaked online by the LA Times that showed a developing contract between Activision, Blizzard and Bungie for a new MMO (massively multiplayer online) product called Destiny and refers to the Xbox 720 by name.

The interesting bit is that Destiny is set to launch in November 2013, which suggests that Microsoft's next generation console could be out at the same time. The Xbox 360 was launched in November 2005 and the original Xbox hit the streets in November 2001. So it is likely that 2013 will be the year of the Xbox with potential key dates being the Game Developers Conference (in March), E3 (in June) and the few weeks following Black Friday, which marks the beginning of the lucrative Christmas shopping season in the US.

There has been a slew of wild rumours from unnamed sources claiming that the Xbox 720 will sport a 16-core CPU, two GPUs, a new version of Microsoft Kinect, will be six times faster than the Xbox 360 and will ship without any optical drive and with a Nintendo Wii-U-like tablet style controller.

My take on it is that the Xbox 720 will be the last dedicated gaming console that Microsoft will bring to market. The years ahead are likely to confirm the hegemony of mobile hardware technology and the rise of cloud-based gaming which requires no physical media, while being permanently locked in a stop/start mode, means that a 16-core smartphone in 2015 could be just as powerful as an Xbox 720 and replace it as a gamer's only gaming platform (it still won't have a decent controller though - ed.).

Taking place in the Well of the Legislative Office Building (LOB) in Albany, Borghese will join Assemblyman Jim Tedisco, Senator Greg Ball, and other legislators from both sides of the aisle to strengthen New York?s animal cruelty laws ? already among the toughest in the nation.

Borghese, a New York City resident, is a familiar face in New York?s animal welfare scene where he lends a welcome voice to a multitude of charitable organizations whose mission is to improve the quality of life for the planet?s animal population.

He has also teamed with Animal Aids? veterinary partners for low-cost spay and neuter services in low income areas throughout the United States. Borghese?s Royal Pet Club donates $2 from every new customer purchase and five percent of profits from Royal Treatment pet care products to support a spay/neuter program throughout the country.

Borghese was compelled to join the Animal Advocacy event to help bring awareness to the plight of abused animals.

Animal Advocacy Day is the latest in a series of events launched In 1999, when more than 118,000 signatures were collected in New York State to pass the landmark Buster?s Law creating the felony category of ?aggravated cruelty to animals,? punishable by up to two years in prison and a $5,000 fine. Buster?s Law was named after an 18-month-old tabby cat that had been doused with kerosene and burned to death by a Schenectady teenager. As research indicates, violence against animals is a bridge crime that can, and has, led to violence against people.

Among the bi-partisan legislation being advocated for are measures to: require anyone convicted of Buster?s Law to undergo a psychiatric evaluation (A.1580/S.5084 and A.1567/S.3805) and be placed on a registry of animal abusers (A.1506/S.3804) as well as bills to increase penalties for animal fighting (S.3806 and A.4407/S.3237). Kevin Rushing, Former Marine, Helps Bring Gaming To Detroit

Detroiter Kevin Rushing wants to use his gaming business, Krush Industries, in order to form a tighter-knit, collaborative community for young adults in the city. But the veteran is drawing on an unlikely source: his experience in the Marines.

"A lot of this came out of my experience coming home as a civilian with PTSD and finding more therapeutic ways to live and healthier lifestyle options," said Rushing, who went to Iraq with the Marine Corps in 2003 and 2004 . "I really think of games as the absolute opposite of warfare; it's collaboration."

The business, which Rushing launched with his brother last year, "started with an idea called 'Big Fun Place.'" The siblings wanted to bring gaming to Detroiters who were looking for new forms of entertainment.

"We don't really want to party hard, drinking and smoking and stuff ... there's a lack of entertainment options for young adults that are healthy and engaging," he said. "We started coming up with events and spaces that were appropriate and cool enough for adults."

As part of their mission, Rushing and his brother recently organized punk rock dodgeball at the Russell Industrial Center, and started trying to raise funds for an assault course based on the '90s television show "Gladiators."

The Rushings also received a CAMP Detroit grant to create an installation, called the Krush Arcade Experience, that will debut at this weekend's Movement Electronic Music Festival and will appear at other city events in the future. It is an arcade machine emulator loaded with old school arcade games, in a tent filled with lights and lasers for an '80s vibe.

"We both really love Detroit and are passionately involved in making it a successful community," Rushing said.

The veteran's ideas are also backed up by recent research, which has suggested that playing video games like Tetris may minimize flashbacks and other psychological symptoms following trauma.

Though the brothers plan future Krush Industries projects, Rushing is also digging into the psychology of gaming and its role in society. He's interested in how elements of gaming, like competitions and receiving incentives for completing tasks -- such as getting points for spending money on a credit card -- can be used in daily life.

"Entertainment will have to be more engaging and thoughtful," Kevin said about his vision of the future of Krush Industries. "There's an ethical portion to this and a community-forward portion that we think will make it more than just an entertainment facility."

For Rushing, his dedication stems from his positive experience with gaming, whether in training competitions with the Marines, arcades or Gladiator challenge courses.

"The thing about playing games and competing," he said, "is you lose yourself in it."
