State of Mind: New California Art Circa 1970

October 3, 2013 ? January 12, 2014

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the Imagists exhibited in Chicago and abstract painting held sway in New York, a distinct strain of avant-garde and conceptual art emerged in California.

The state was an incubator of social change and counter-culture that attracted artists seeking alternatives to traditional modes of art making. California's distance from commercial galleries and the art-world press also gave artists greater freedom to experiment as they challenged the definition of art, the role of the artist, and the academic and institutional structures of the art world.

Organized as part of the landmark Pacific Standard Time initiative by the University of California, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA) and the Orange County Museum of Art, State of Mind: New California Art Circa 1970 is the first in-depth survey of conceptual art in California. It examines this formative period and the enduring legacy it has left for succeeding generations of artists. It includes the work of sixty artists and collectives, including Ant Farm, John Baldessari, Chris Burden, Lynn Hershman, Bruce Nauman, Martha Rosler, and Ed Ruscha. Organized thematically, the exhibition showcases more than 150 works of art?installations, photographs, videos and films, artists' books, and extensive performance documentation?that demonstrate the critical role of California artists in the development of conceptual art and other new genres.

Plants moderate climate warming

Monday, April 29, 2013

As temperatures warm, plants release gases that help form clouds and cool the atmosphere, according to research from IIASA and the University of Helsinki.

The new study, published in Nature Geoscience, identified a negative feedback loop in which higher temperatures lead to an increase in concentrations of natural aerosols that have a cooling effect on the atmosphere.

"Plants, by reacting to changes in temperature, also moderate these changes," says IIASA and University of Helsinki researcher Pauli Paasonen, who led the study.

Scientists had known that some aerosols ? particles that float in the atmosphere ? cool the climate as they reflect sunlight and form cloud droplets, which reflect sunlight efficiently. Aerosol particles come from many sources, including human emissions. But the effect of so-called biogenic aerosol ? particulate matter that originates from plants ? had been less well understood. Plants release gases that, after atmospheric oxidation, tend to stick to aerosol particles, growing them into the larger-sized particles that reflect sunlight and also serve as the basis for cloud droplets. The new study showed that as temperatures warm and plants consequently release more of these gases, the concentrations of particles active in cloud formation increase.

"Everyone knows the scent of the forest," says Ari Asmi, University of Helsinki researcher who also worked on the study. "That scent is made up of these gases." While previous research had predicted the feedback effect, until now nobody had been able to prove its existence except for case studies limited to single sites and short time periods. The new study showed that the effect occurs over the long-term in continental size scales.

The effect of enhanced plant gas emissions on climate is small on a global scale ? only countering approximately 1 percent of climate warming, the study suggested. "This does not save us from climate warming," says Paasonen. However, he says, "Aerosol effects on climate are one of the main uncertainties in climate models. Understanding this mechanism could help us reduce those uncertainties and make the models better."

The study also showed that the effect was much larger on a regional scale, counteracting possibly up to 30% of warming in more rural, forested areas where anthropogenic emissions of aerosols were much lower in comparison to the natural aerosols. That means that especially in places like Finland, Siberia, and Canada this feedback loop may reduce warming substantially.

The researchers collected data at 11 different sites around the world, measuring the concentrations of aerosol particles in the atmosphere, along with the concentrations of plant gases, the temperature, and reanalysis estimates for the height of the boundary layer, which turned out to be a key variable. The boundary layer refers to the layer of air closest to the Earth, in which gases and particles mix effectively. The height of that layer changes with weather. Paasonen says, "One of the reasons that this phenomenon was not discovered earlier was because these estimates for boundary layer height are very difficult to do. Only recently have the reanalysis estimates been improved to where they can be taken as representative of reality."

VW brand bears brunt of crisis as first-quarter profit halves

BERLIN (Reuters) - First-quarter profit at Volkswagen's core brand almost halved, Europe's biggest carmaker said on Monday, as manufacturers battle the region's protracted slump in demand with ever deeper discounts.

Operating profit at the VW brand, which accounts for over half the German group's 46.6 billion-euro ($60.7 billion) sales, plunged to 590 million euros, VW said, giving details on a drop in quarterly group earnings announced last week.

The VW brand's profit margin tumbled to 2.4 percent from 4.1 percent in the first three months of 2012.

"The current environment is definitely a tough challenge for the entire industry," Chief Executive Martin Winterkorn said in a statement.

VW-brand deliveries, including VW's all-time best-selling Golf hatchback, fell in March for the first time in over three years.

Still, the company said last week it would stand by targets announced on March 14 to match the 2012 record operating profit of 11.5 billion euros and to push sales and deliveries to new record levels.

Wolfsburg-based VW is pinning its hopes for growing sales volumes on about 60 new models this year including facelifts and overhauls as well as the new Golf, launched in November.

One VW dealer told Reuters the multi-brand group has been pushing sales of models like the Golf or the Tiguan compact SUV since February with retail sales incentives of as much as 1,800 euros per vehicle under a special discount program slated to run through June 30.

Depending on VW's budget, the program could be extended by another 3 months, the dealer said, declining to be identified as the sales policy is confidential.

"The VW group is not completely immune to the intense competition and the impact this is having on business," CEO Winterkorn said.

Underlying profit at the Audi luxury brand declined 7.3 percent to 1.31 billion euros, VW said.

The loss at Spanish division Seat widened to 46 million euros from 29 million euros a year earlier, underscoring the need for action as VW plans to swap the brand's CEO on May 1.

Undercover Cops Are Selling iPhones On The Street To Get People To Stop Buying Stolen iPhones

In San Francisco police are trying a new tactic to disincentivize people from buying stolen iPhones: they're trapping them in undercover stings. Wearing plain clothes, the officers are going around certain city areas and selling iPhones which they readily indicate are stolen. When someone tries to buy one, they make an arrest.

The goal is to reduce the market for stolen iPhones by scaring consumers away. The police say that in San Francisco half of all thefts involve stealing smartphones, and often thieves target women. The police are specifically setting up in areas that they know are popular for selling stolen goods, like the corner of 7th and Market Streets.

For the operation to be legal, the police officers must have the would-be customer name a price rather than suggesting one. Huffington Post reports that buyers tend to suggest offers ranging from $25 to $200. It's unclear whether this approach will accomplish anything in terms of reducing the demand for stolen iPhones and by extension iPhone theft. A similar effort in New York City led to a lawsuit which alleges that a member of the NYPD pressured a buyer and baited him. Maybe it's best to stay away from stolen iPhones for awhile. Or, you know, just always. [Huffington Post via CNET]
