Protesters demonstrate against nuclear power plants at Japan's parliament

Anti-nuclear activists protest against nuclear power plant in front of Japan parliament in Tokyo

Tens of thousands of people protested against nuclear power plants outside Japan's parliament on Sunday.

The protesters, including pensioners, were pressed up against a wall of steel thrown around the parliament building. Some broke through the barriers and spilled onto the streets, forcing the police to bring in reinforcements and deploy armoured buses to buttress the main parliament gate.

The protest came as results from rural Yamaguchi showed that Tetsunari Iida, an advocate of renewable energy, had lost his bid to become governor. He was defeated by a candidate backed by the opposition Liberal Democratic party (LDP), which promoted nuclear energy during its decades in power, Kyodo news agency reported.

Iida, who wants Japan to give up nuclear power by 2020, had promised to revitalise Yamaguchi's economy with renewable energy projects and opposed a project to build a new nuclear plant in the town of Kaminoseki.

Energy policy has become a major headache for prime minister, Yoshihiko Noda. Weekly protests outside the PM's office have grown in size in recent months, with ordinary workers and mothers with children joining the crowds.

On Sunday, the protesters, holding candles, took their demonstration to parliament. Many had marched past the headquarters of Tokyo Electric Power Co, the company at the heart of Fukushima disaster, the worst nuclear crisis since Chernobyl in 1986.

"We are here to oppose nuclear power, which is simply too dangerous," said Hiroko Yamada, an elderly woman from Saitama prefecture near Tokyo.

"[Noda] isn't listening to us. He only listens to companies and Yonekura," she said, referring to Hiromasa Yonekura, the chairman of Japan's biggest business lobby.

An upset victory by Iida would have put pressure on the government which is considering an energy portfolio to replace a 2010 programme that would have boosted nuclear power's share of electricity supply to more than half by 2030.

Noda, who approved restarting two reactors recently, has said he would decide on a new medium-term energy plan in August, but reports said that decision could be delayed.

Experts have proposed three options: zero nuclear power as soon as possible, a 15% atomic share of electricity by 2030, or 20-25% by the same date compared to almost 30% before the Fukushima disaster.

Under pressure from businesses worried about stable electricity supply, Noda has been thought to be leaning towards the 15% option, which would require all of Japan's 50 reactors to resume operations before gradually closing older units.

The growing anti-nuclear movement, however, may make that choice difficult.

Multiple inquiries into the Fukushima nuclear disaster have pointed to the failure by authorities and energy companies to adopt strict safety measures and disaster response plans.

Phelps sets Olympic record with 19th medal

LONDON ? In the final 10 meters of his history-making race, Michael Phelps was alone in the open ? a fitting margin for an Olympic icon who is now the most decorated medal-winner of all time.

Swimming the anchor leg of the men?s 200-freestyle relay, Phelps held onto a significant lead and delivered the United States another gold medal ? the 15th of his career and the 19th time he has stood on an Olympic podium. He?s now alone in the overall medal count, having broken a tie with Russian gymnast Larissa Latynina as the most-decorated athlete in the history of the Games.

Phelps entered the night with 17 medals, wining silver in the 200-meter butterfly and then gold in the 4x200, swimming the two races a little over one hour apart.

Michael Phelps poses with his the 19th Olypmic medal he's won. (APJust before the 4x200 began, Phelps pulled his teammates into a huddle and expressed his gratitude for their part in the moment. He delivered one last request.

"I wanted a big lead," Phelps said. "I told the guys, 'Get me a big lead.' And they gave it to me."

The crowd in London?s Aquatics Centre thundered in applause for much of the race as the United States? Ryan Lochte ? one of Phelps chief rivals in the last four years ? got the Americans off to a blazing start. It was a change of sorts for Lochte, who anchored the 4x100 silver medal effort ? in which the U.S. was overtaken by the French in the closing moments. This time, U.S. men?s coach Gregg Troy put Lochte in the lead-off leg, offering him an opportunity to get Phelps the lead he desired.

He did just that, swimming the fastest lead-off leg and outpacing the French by 1.55 seconds over the first 200 meters.

"The past two days I wasn?t myself," Lochte said of his sprint struggles in these Games. "After [the 400 freestyle silver medal] my confidence was gone. Everyone kept telling me, 'You?re better than that.' I didn?t swim this morning and I think that helped. I was back to myself. I was that happy-go-lucky guy."

Shortly before Tuesday night's swim meet, Latynina told Yahoo! Sports' Martin Rogers that the medals she also won as a coach still separate her from Phelps.

"Do I think I am still the greatest Olympian?" she said in an interview translated by a Russian gymnastics federation official. "Why yes, but that is my opinion.

"Why do I think this? Well, I did not only compete in three Olympic Games and won many medals, but the Soviet Union team had very great success when I was the coach."

Latynina won nine golds and 18 total medals in her career that spanned three Olympics from 1956-64. The Soviet Union also claimed another 10 golds when she was coach during the 1970s. She also said Phelps has her respect.

"It is special what he has done," Latynina said.

In a tribute to Phelps and recognizing the speed he showed in the 4x100 relay earlier in the games, U.S. coaches shuffled their 4x200 order, placing Phelps in the closing leg. While some may argue it as grandstanding by the U.S., Phelps?s blazing 47.15-second split in the 4x100 relay actually made him an ideal anchor candidate. This despite Phelps' long-standing history as a leadoff man in U.S. relays. It was also clearly a nod of respect from the U.S. coaches for a career that has rewritten American and Olympic record books while lifting U.S. swimming to unprecedented heights.

The relay unfolded as dramatically as you would expect, with Lochte, Conor Dwyer and Ricky Berens giving Phelps the sizable lead he wanted. Phelps went into the pool and was never challenged, stretching the lead in the first 150 meters and then going into the wall nearly 10 meters ahead of the French.

Phelps moved into position for the history-making moment earlier Tuesday night with his second-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly, giving him 18 Olympic podiums. He looked poised to take gold in the race, charging out early and leading after all three of the turns, before appearing to labor in the final 25 meters. That allowed South Africa?s Chad le Clos to close the gap, with the two going stroke-for-stoke in the last 10 meters. Le Clos stretched at the end, out-touching Phelps for gold, in 1:52.96 against Phelps?s 1:53.01. Phelps looked at the video board and said some words to himself, appearing disappointed with what was ultimately a wrist-length from gold.

Phelps had reason to smile less than an hour later.

Former 'Idol' Kimberley Locke wants judge's chair

NEW YORK (AP) ? Kimberley Locke wants to fill that vacant judge's chair on "American Idol." The season two finalist feels having a former contestant on the show can bring renewed interest to the popular TV singing competition.

"I would love to sit in that chair and, you know, give some advice from the contestant's standpoint because I've been on that stage and I know what it's like," Locke said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press.

But don't consider her a pushover. Locke says she would be brutally honest about each performance and "give it with no fluff."

"When you're a contestant on that show you do need that hard truth sometimes," Locke says, anticipating her critical tone would fall somewhere between the styles of two former judges.

"I'm not quite as nice as Paula (Abdul). Paula's super, supernice but I don't think I'm quite as mean as Simon (Cowell) either."

The empty judges' chairs came after Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez decided not to come back for another season. Last week, Mariah Carey confirmed she would join the Fox show's 12th season. Other names mentioned to fill the missing spot include Nick Jonas, Pharrell Williams and Charlie Sheen.

Locke loves the idea of former contestants coming back to judge. Adam Lambert has also been vocal about his willingness to be a judge on "Idol."

Since finishing behind Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken at the end of the show's second season, Locke embarked on a solo career, releasing two albums on Curb Records. Locke recently started her own label, IAM Entertainment. Her first single, "Finally Free," came out Tuesday. She plans to release another single this year and a full album early next year.

UFC on FOX 4, Roy Nelson, Chris Weidman: The Morning News Roundup ? 7.30.12

It's fight week, that precious time in the news cycle?when the public relations drones at the UFC and FOX do their best to spawn storylines that will rope in viewers while media members of various degrees of accumen regurgitate or attempt spins?on what they perceive the real stories to be.? Yes, it's a kind of dance, but the music is lovely, and at the end of?it everyone gets to keep a goody bag of memories, plus whatever silverware they can steal.??With UFC on FOX 4 slated for Saturday, the?week will be spent dwelling on all things related to said show, and is that such a bad thing?? We're going to get to see?some perennial favorites in action,?so I'd say no, it's not bad at all.? Just be prepared to see at least one item about UFC on FOX 4 every day.? I'm certainly prepared.

  • A one-hour special called "UFC's Road to the Octagon", which hypes the UFC on FOX 4 main card,?began airing yesterday on FOX.? It will be shown again (and again, and again) on?the different FOX-owned networks between now and Saturday night, but since such factors as where you live and whether you have cable, satellite dish or a coat hanger antenna on your TV make it impossible for me to tell you specifically when you can watch it, I'll just say check your local listings.? ?

?

  • Roy Nelson, who won "The Ultimate Fighter - Season 10" (the season with Kimbo Slice) and has been struggling to find a place in the UFC's heavyweight division ever since, has been tapped to coach the upcoming sixteenth season of the beloved (heh-heh) reality TV show opposite Shane Carwin.? Nelson's also begun his campaign of irreverent hype by releasing?the names of people the UFC has forbidden him from using as coaches on the show.? As usual, MMAFighting ace reporter Ariel Helwani has the sweetness: ??

Former Strikeforce fighter turned Bellator and TNA Wrestling star Muhammed Lawal, pro wrestling legend Kurt Angle and Victor Conte, the founder of BALCO Laboratories, are "non-UFC allowed," according to Nelson.? Nelson's manager Mike Kogan confirmed to MMAFighting.com that the UFC will not allow the trio to appear on the show.

?

  • Chris Weidman is riding high off his dominant destruction of the usually deadly Mark Munoz, so why not capitalize on that momentum by hounding UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva for a shot at the belt?? Actually, when Silva's manager Jorge Guimaraes calls you an "amateur", I guess you're not really hounding, you're just defending yourself.? Am I right?? Anyway, here's Weidman defending himself, courtesy of MMAWeekly:

"I read them and it's kind of crazy.? The managers they have no right to start putting down professional athletes.? He put me, and (Alan) Belcher, and (Tim) Boetsch down and he's trying to draw attention away from the fact that I'm the No. 1 contender, and then called us amateurs, and we're all top ten fighters," Weidman told MMAWeekly.com when reached for comment.

?

Yeah, tell 'em, Chris.

That's all for now.

Five-Time Cancer Survivor: ' I Roundhouse Kick It In The Face'

While the Reddit IAMA forum has lost some of its sheen with the influx of promotional personalities, there still are the personal stories of triumph and perseverance of human spirit like that of the 21-year-old cancer survivor who has lived through five bouts of cancer.

User 5timecancerpatient took to Reddit to share her experiences and reach out to people who have overcome similar situations.

(Credit/Imgur:5timecancerpatient)

Surviving cancer once, twice, maybe three times may be rare, but five times is practically unheard of, especially at such a young age. According to a recent report by the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute, only 5 percent of cancer survivors are 40-years-old or younger, while 50 percent are 70-yearls-old or older.

The 21-year-old who lives outside Los Angeles has suffered through three different types of cancer starting with brain cancer when she was 2-years-old. Fortunately, 5timecancerpatient, who did not release her real name, was diagnosed early after her mother noticed concerning symptoms.

"Any time I tried walking, I would fall flat on my face, I would pass out or have seizures randomly, and I was having trouble speaking," 5timecancerpatient wrote.

After her first bout of brain cancer, she developed skin cancer, which she described as "no big deal at all," followed by esophageal cancer -- "the worst, hands down," she wrote.

When I had that I had to drop out of swimming and got major major surgery which means I can't throw up or burp now and I was in the hospital for six months and on a liquid diet for a year. I had to re-learn how to walk and how to talk and the muscles inside me were just ripped up and ruined. I used to sing opera, and my voice totally changed so I don't sing anymore. I think of anything I've lost due to cancer, that was the biggest blow.

And if she wasn't the unluckiest person in the world already after surviving three different types of cancer, she relapsed and brain cancer overtook her again, stemming from the original tumor that was not completely removed. A month later, she found out she had skin cancer, again.

The lack of downtime between her second round of brain and skin cancer may have been the most difficult to muster. With medical bills piling up -- they now stand at a whopping $20,000 -- she was forced to move back in with her parents and take on three jobs.

But this story does have happy ending.

"As of THIS WEEK I am cancer free," she wrote on Reddit. "I had surgery on Thursday and once my stitches are out, hopefully the only thing that will remain is a scar. It feels unbelievable that I've done this. Sometimes I look back and just wonder how it happened."

Not only is she pursuing her teaching credentials in college, but 5timecancerpatient is also staying physically active by training for a marathon.

Through her horrible health luck -- genetics are partially to blame -- she has a positive outlook on the future.

"I don't always have cancer," 5timecancerpatient wrote, "but when I do, I roundhouse kick it in the face."

Iran sentences four to death in bank fraud trial

A Tehran court has sentenced to death four people convicted in Iran's biggest-ever banking scandal, according to the national chief prosecutor on Monday, quoted by the official news agency IRNA.

The sentences came at the end of a trial of 39 suspects that started in February. The magnitude of the scandal was estimated last year at $2.6 billion.

"According to the verdict, four people were sentenced to death," chief prosecutor Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejeie was quoted as saying.

Mohseni Ejeie said two other of the suspects were sentenced to life in prison and the remaining received terms behind bars of up to 25 years after also being found guilty of corruption.

The identities of those convicted were not made public.

The scandal revolved around a private group that amassed trillions of rials in loans from half a dozen Iranian banks through what were said to be forged or illegally procured letters of credit to buy several state companies up for privatisation.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad last year denied accusations from some critical media outlets that his office had any links to the fraud.

Lochte wins 400 IM in blowout; Phelps finishes 4th

LONDON (AP) ? Ryan Lochte strolled the deck of the Olympic Aquatics Centre wearing diamonds in his mouth and lime-green sneakers on the feet that powered him through the water faster than anyone else. Beaming, he chomped playfully on his gold medal while Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" blared throughout the massive arena.

Michael Phelps?

He was nowhere to be found.

Not during the race.

Not when it came time to hand out the medals.

On a stunner of an opening night at the pool in London, Phelps was routed by his American rival in the 400-meter individual medley, losing to Lochte by more than 4 seconds Saturday. That's not all: The winningest Olympian ever didn't win any medal at all, the first time that's happened in a race of this magnitude since he was a 15-year-old kid competing in just one event at the Sydney Games, a dozen years ago.

"It was horrible," Phelps told coach Bob Bowman when he climbed out.

Bowman's reply: "It was."

Lochte turned the much-anticipated duel with Phelps into a blowout, raising serious questions about whether the guy who has won 14 gold medals and 16 medals overall has anything left in the tank for his Olympic farewell.

Phelps is planning to retire as soon as he finishes the last of his seven races in London, but he looked ready to call it a career while struggling just to pull himself from the water when his first event was done.

He was totally spent.

He was thoroughly beaten, perhaps signaling a changing of the guard at the pool.

"This is my year," said Lochte, who popped in his grillz ? diamond-studded mouth jewelry ? for the victory ceremony. "I know it and I feel it, because I've put in hard work. I've trained my butt off for four years ... and there's no better way to start this Olympics off than getting gold."

For Phelps, the start of these games couldn't have been more out of character.

He barely qualified for the evening final, a performance that hinted at trouble ahead. Trouble indeed. Phelps struggled to a fourth-place finish, blown out by Lochte and beaten by Brazil's Thiago Pereira and Japan's Kosuke Hagino.

"It was just a crappy race," Phelps said. "I felt fine the first 200, then I don't know. They just swam a better race than me, a smarter race than me, and were better prepared than me. That's why they're on the medal stand."

Lochte took the gold with a time of 4 minutes, 5.18 seconds. Pereira (4:08.86) and Hagino (4:08.94) were well back but ahead of Phelps, who touched fourth in 4:09.28 ? nearly 5 1-2 seconds off his world record from the Beijing Olympics and not nearly as fast as he went during the U.S. trials last month.

Since finishing fifth in his lone event at Sydney, the 200 butterfly, Phelps was 16-of-16 when it came to winning medals at the Olympics ? 14 golds and two bronzes. That run is over.

Lochte climbed out of the pool with a big smile, waving to the crowd and looking about as fresh as he did at the start. He had predicted this would be his year and, for the first race of the Olympics at least, he was right on the mark.

"I think I'm kind of in shock right now," he said. As for Phelps, "I know he gave it everything he had. That's all you can ask for."

Phelps was trying to become the first male swimmer to win the same individual event at three straight Olympics. He'll have three more chances at a threepeat before he's done in London, having also won the 200 individual medley, plus the 100 and 200 butterfly, at Athens and Beijing.

But he'll need a major comeback. After one race, he looks nothing like the swimmer who won six gold medals in Athens, then a record eight in Beijing to break Mark Spitz's Olympic record.

"I'm surprised, and not pleasantly," Bowman said. "I expected he'd be in the 4:06 range."

With first lady Michelle Obama in the house waving a small U.S. flag, everyone expected a duel between the two American stars.

Only Lochte showed up.

Phelps fell behind right from the start in the butterfly, his trademark stroke. From there, it was all Lochte. He stretched his margin in the backstroke and breaststroke, then cruised to the gold in the freestyle, a good three body lengths ahead of the rest of the field.

"It's frustrating, that's all I can say. It's pretty upsetting," Phelps said. "The biggest thing now is to try to look forward. I have a bunch of other races, and hopefully we can finish a lot better than how we started."

China had a big night, claiming a couple of gold medals.

Sixteen-year-old Ye Shiwen set a world record in the women's 400 individual medley ? only the third mark to fall since high-tech bodysuits were banned at the end of 2009. She won in 4:28.43, breaking the mark of 4:29.45 by Australia's Stephanie Rice at the 2008 Beijing Games. American Elizabeth Beisel took silver and China's Li Xuanxu grabbed the bronze.

Sun Yang flirted with a world record in the men's 400 freestyle. He took gold in 3:40.14, just off the mark of 3:40.07 by Germany's Paul Biedermann in a rubberized suit three years ago. When it was done, Sun propped himself on the lane rope, pumping his fist and splashing the water.

South Korea's Park Tae-hwan won silver in 3:42.06, fortunate even to take part after initially being disqualified for a false start in the prelims. The ruling was overturned by governing body FINA a couple of hours later on appeal. Peter Vanderkaay of the U.S. won the bronze.

Australia captured gold in the women's 400 freestyle relay with an Olympic record of 3:33.15, rallying to pass the Americans and hold off the fast-charging Netherlands.

The U.S. got off to a blistering start with Missy Franklin swimming leadoff under world-record pace, and the Americans were still ahead after Jessica Hardy went next. But the Australians rallied behind Brittany Elmslie on the third 100, and Melanie Schlanger held on at the end, with Ranomi Kromowidjojo closing fast to give the Netherlands a silver in 3:33.79.

The other members of the winning team were Alicia Coutts and Cate Campbell.

The Americans slipped to the bronze in 3:34.24, but that was still good enough to give Natalie Coughlin the 12th medal of her career, tying Dara Torres and Jenny Thompson as the most decorated U.S. female Olympians in any sport.

Coughlin swam in the morning prelims, then was reduced to the role of cheerleader in the evening as the Americans went with Franklin, Hardy, Lia Neal and Allison Schmitt. Everyone who swims on a relay gets a medal, though.

"I really have no idea what to think of it so far," Coughlin said. "I'll have to take it all in tonight. I'm very proud of it, but I've never been on a morning relay before."

There was no medal for Phelps.

His close call in the morning prelims put him in an already uncustomary position ? swimming on the outside in the No. 8 lane. He only had one swimmer next to him and no idea what Lochte and the others in the middle of the pool were doing.

Not that it would have mattered.

"I don't think the lane had anything to do with it," Phelps said. "I just couldn't really put myself in a good spot for that race. It's frustrating for sure. ... It's just really frustrating to start off on a bad note like this."

Phelps still has six more events to swim in London, plenty of time to make up for his dismal start. He remains two behind the most medals won by any Olympian ? Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina's mark of 18 ? nine gold, five silver, four bronze.

Phelps put himself in position to swim another eight events with his performance at the U.S. trials, but he decided to drop the 200-meter freestyle, feeling one less race would give his body a better chance to recover and improve his performance in the other events.

Now, he may be regretting that decision.

The 400 IM was an event he has dominated, winning gold at the last two Olympics and holding the world record for a full decade. But, tired of putting his body through such a grind, he dropped it from his program after setting a world record in Beijing four years ago (4:03.84), vowing never to swim it again.

He should have stuck with that pledge. Clearly, Phelps didn't leave himself enough time to get back in the kind of shape he needed to win the brutal race, having only brought it back earlier this year.

"I was lucky to get in," he said, referring to his slow time in the morning. "I had a chance to put myself in a spot to start off on a good note and didn't do it."

Lochte gave the Americans their first gold medal of the London Games and put himself in position to fulfill the promise he showed at last year's world championships, where he won five golds and beat Phelps in their two head-to-head meetings.

The friendly rivals have one more showdown in London, in the 200 individual medley. Phelps edged Lochte in that race during the U.S. Olympics trials, but Lochte appears to be on top of his game when it really counts.

They might be working together on Sunday, when both are in the mix to compete for the U.S. in the 4x100 free relay.

There appear to be no hard feelings.

"Congrats to (at)RyanLochte," Phelps tweeted afterward. "Way to keep that title in the country where it belongs!!"

"Thanks," Lochte replied: "I couldn't do it without you."

Minn. bikini parade falls far short of record

MADISON LAKE, Minn. (AP) ? Only an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny number of bikini-wearers turned out to strut their stuff in a southern Minnesota town.

Organizers had hoped for hundreds of women to march Saturday in what was billed as the World's Largest Bikini Parade.

But the number of bikini-wearing women ? and a couple of men in bikini tops ? at the Paddlefish Days Parade in Madison Lake fell far short of the world record.

The (Mankato, Minn.) Free Press (http://bit.ly/Mrt1N4 ) reported Saturday the number appeared to be 39. Women were told they could wear shorts over their bikini bottoms once it was clear the record of 451 was unattainable.

A majority of City Council members opposed the bikini parade. Some said it was inconsistent with the festival's family-oriented nature.

China's Economy Claims Next Victim: Sheldon Adelson

The sinking Chinese economy is claiming another victim.? His name is Sheldon Adelson.

Adelson, the Las Vegas mogul, can save himself by shelving ambitious expansion plans in Macau, a special administrative region of the People?s Republic of China.? At the moment, however, it does not look like he will pull back in time.

Sands China, the Hong Kong-listed arm of Las Vegas Sands, intends to begin work on a new ?family-oriented? resort on Parcel 3, a plot on Macau?s Cotai Strip, by November. ?That?s in addition to plans to build a fourth tower at the newly opened Sands Cotai Central and a building at the back of The Venetian Macau, the world?s largest casino.? Sands China has, in addition to these properties, The Sands Macau and The Four Seasons Hotel Macau.

Adelson?s ambitious expansion plans?and the optimistic programs of other casino taipans?made sense when Macau?s gaming revenues were growing at an extraordinary pace.? Revenues were up 58% in 2010 and 42% last year.? This January, growth came in at a still-robust 34.8%. ?Revenues grew between 21.9% to 24.4% in the February-April period.

May, however, was a bummer, when they increased only 7.3%.? June came in at 12.2%.? The small uptick last month looks temporary.? Investment banks think revenue growth this month will be a puny 3%.

For the full year, Fitch Ratings estimates Macau gaming revenues will increase in the 10%-12% range.? ?Our updated forecast implies low-to-mid single-digit market revenue growth for the rest of 2012,? the company said this month. ?At the beginning of June, Fitch predicted a far more optimistic 20% for the year.

In this deteriorating environment, investors have dumped Sands China, not liking Adelson?s large bets on Cotai.? The two big victims in this spring?s sell-off have been Sands China and Steve Wynn?s Wynn Macau.? Both stocks are down more than 30% since reaching highs in April.

And it?s not hard to see why they?re tumbling. ?In the second quarter, Wynn Macau reported a drop in revenue of 7.1%, the first quarterly fall since 2009.? Sands China increased revenue to $1.48 billion, but it did not meet expectations of $1.52 billion.? Net income fell 40.0% to $160.5 million from the same quarter in 2011.

And the deterioration in results looks like it will continue.? Not only is construction creating more supply, demand is stalling.? Macau, considered the world?s biggest and most profitable gaming destination, is all about Chinese tourists?especially officials looking to launder cash?but the heyday of gambling forays to Macau is rapidly coming to an end.

The Fitch forecast for Macau gaming is essentially based on its view of the Chinese economy, which it believes will expand 8.0% this year.? China, however, cannot grow nearly that fast.? In Q1, China in reality expanded in the low single digits.? Q2 was far worse.? Last quarter, the economy came in at about 0%?if it grew at all.

The collapse of Chinese growth rates has meant that fewer Mainland Chinese visitors are coming to gamble in Macau.? That, in turn, has directly affected junket operators, which account for about 70% of Macau?s gaming revenues.? The operators, which dominate the business in the casinos? VIP rooms, bring gamblers from the Mainland and extend credit, especially to the most wealthy of them.

Junket operators are now having difficulty collecting debts.? ?On average, repayment period is around 15 days,? notes Kenny Leong, chief executive of Asia Entertainment & Resources, one of Macau?s top 10 junket operators.? ?Now some gamblers are asking for 2-3 days longer.?

Volvo to demonstrate green efficiency at IAA 2012

Since serial production commenced in 2010, Volvo Buses has sold more than 760 hybrid buses to 20 countries. The company is thus the leading supplier of hybrid buses in Europe.

Sales successes are due to the hybrid?s excellent energy efficiency and environmental properties: the Volvo 7900 Hybrid has approximately 37% lower fuel consumption and climate impact than a corresponding diesel option and only half the amount of emissions of nitrogen oxides and particles. The hybrid also maintains the same quality as Volvo?s diesel buses in terms of operational reliability and availability.

The body of the Volvo 7900 Hybrid is built largely of aluminium and fiberglass, which entails low weight and thus also low fuel consumption and the possibility to carry more passengers. Volvo?s hybrid buses are equipped with a smaller diesel engine and an electric motor. The energy generated when the brakes are applied is utilized, which means that fuel consumption is radically reduced. At bus stops, the diesel engine switches off and the bus operates quietly and completely exhaust-free on electricity.

UN arms talks end without deal

UN negotiations to draft the first international treaty on the multi-billion-dollar arms trade have ended without a deal, with some diplomats blaming the United States for the deadlock.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon said Friday he was "disappointed" that member states failed to clinch an agreement after several years of preparatory work and four weeks of negotiations, calling it a "setback."

But he vowed "steadfast" commitment to obtaining a "robust" arms trade treaty, noting that countries had agreed to pursue negotiations.

"There is already considerable common ground and states can build on the hard work that has been done during these negotiations," he added.

Some diplomats said Washington had refused to vote on the proposed text, saying it needed more time before the midnight deadline and was worried about a pushback from the US Congress.

Russia and other countries followed suit.

"It's the fault of the United States that we failed," a Western diplomat said, requesting anonymity to speak freely about the subject.

"They derailed the process and we will have to wait for the US presidential elections" in November to get out of the impasse, the diplomat added.

But State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said, in a written statement issued late Friday, that the United States supported a second round of negotiations, conducted on the basis of consensus, on the treaty next year.

Nuland noted that while the illicit trafficking in conventional arms was an important national security concern for the United States, Washington did not support a vote at the UN General Assembly on the current text.

"While we sought to conclude this month's negotiations with a Treaty, more time is a reasonable request for such a complex and critical issue," the spokeswoman said. "The current text reflects considerable positive progress, but it needs further review and refinement."

She did not offer any specifics.

Conference chairman Ambassador Roberto Garcia Moritan of Argentina acknowledged that some countries had objected to the final treaty draft. The UN General Assembly, which begins its new session in late September, will decide whether and when there will be more negotiations.

In the end, 90 countries -- including all European Union members, and states from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa -- signed the text, saying they were "disappointed but... not discouraged" and vowing to soon finalize a treaty based on Moritan's draft.

A consensus of all 193 countries involved in the talks had been required to agree on the accord.

"We always thought this was going be difficult and that this outcome was a possible one," said Moritan.

But he predicted that delegates would have a treaty in their hands "soon."

France's main negotiator, Ambassador Jean-Hugues Simon-Michel, said the failure to reach agreement was the "worst possible scenario" and that diplomats may now have to start all over again.

"The result is rather frustrating and the ball is now in the country of the General Assembly," he told AFP.

Rights groups were also quick to blame the stalemate on the United States, where any treaty on conventional arms sales is vehemently opposed by the powerful gun lobby.

"It was a lack of political will on the part of President (Barack) Obama to take this historic opportunity forward to reduce the effect of the illicit arms trade," said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association.

He called for "leadership" from Washington, Moscow, London and other major arms exporters and importers, while Oxfam America's senior policy adviser Scott Stedjan blamed the impasse on a lack of "political courage" from Obama.

The White House's failure of courage to press this treaty to conclusion today... is a loss for hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians that die each year from armed violence fueled by the unregulated transfer of arms," said Stedjan.

Lynn's College of Business and Management creates new internship

July 26, 2012 ????? 0 Comments

Lynn-University pic

BOCA RATON? Lynn University has created an innovative new program to support and help prepare students in the?College of Business and Management?for a career in the business world.

Rick Sayers, who has served as the executive in residence of the college for the past three years, has been named executive director of new Internships and Cooperative Education Program. The goal is to help students discover their intellectual and personal strengths through formal preparation to include: mock interviews (face-to-face, phone and Skype), resume and cover letter writing, business etiquette skills and personality profile (Myers-Briggs).

?Getting Lynn students ready for a successful professional life after college is a primary responsibility,? said Sayers.? ?This program will give them an advantage in obtaining internships and cooperative education experience and make them better prepared to meet, interview and work with individuals in the business community.?

An important component of the program will be the business relationships that will be developed with the corporate and business community. ?We will reach out to organizations that match up with the skills, interests and global diversity of our students for mutually beneficial partnerships,? he said.

Contacts have already been made with Office Depot, PwC, Sherwin Williams, Parker Hannifin, Jarden, Via Mizner, 02 media Inc., AXA Equitable and C3 Interactive and others.

In hiring students for internships Sayers said corporations are looking for the opportunity to ?test drive? potential employees before making a permanent offer. They also look for intelligent, energetic talent with summer and/or school year projects. Students benefit by experiencing the company culture, management style and other organizational dynamics before having to make a decision for full time employment as well.

Internships are required in virtually all COBM curriculums. Though this program will initially be rolled out in the COBM, it is expected to expand to the other colleges.

?We are very fortunate to have Rick as executive director to lead this new program,? said Thomas Kruczek, dean of the College of Business and Management.? ?With his extensive background in human resources in the corporate space, he knows exactly what corporations are looking for in new hires and he will do an outstanding job of getting our students ready.?

Sayers has more than 35 years of senior executive human resources and corporate business leadership experience. He was executive vice president and chief human resources officer for Agilysys Inc., an IT solutions corporation; a managing director for the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) practice at Price Water house Coopers LLP; and corporate vice president for human resources at Invacare Corporation, a billion dollar leading manufacturer of home health care products.? He began his career at TRW, a Fortune 100 automotive and aerospace organization where he rose to the level of human resources vice president for the Global Steering and Suspension business.

Mountain Lion Walks the Fence Between Innovation and Stagnation

Finally. Apple's latest version of OS X, Mountain Lion, is here. Mountain Lion isn't the biggest or baddest cat ever, but Apple has been getting better and better at delivering incremental innovation that pushes its Mac operating systems forward, connects it to new devices and the world in new ways, and doesn't freak anyone out with radical newness that might might be shiny but ultimately worse than before.

Scientists explore new class of synthetic vaccines

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

In a quest to make safer and more effective vaccines, scientists at the Biodesign Institute? at Arizona State University have turned to a promising field called DNA nanotechnology to make an entirely new class of synthetic vaccines.

In a study published in the journal Nano Letters, Biodesign immunologist Yung Chang joined forces with her colleagues, including DNA nanotechnology innovator Hao Yan, to develop the first vaccine complex that could be delivered safely and effectively by piggybacking onto self-assembled, three-dimensional DNA nanostructures.

"When Hao treated DNA not as a genetic material, but as a scaffolding material, that made me think of possible applications in immunology," said Chang, an associate professor in the School of Life Sciences and a researcher in the Biodesign Institute's Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology. "This provided a great opportunity to try to use these DNA scaffolds to make a synthetic vaccine."

"The major concern was: Is it safe? We wanted to mimic the assembly of molecules that can trigger a safe and powerful immune response in the body. As Hao's team has developed a variety of interesting DNA nanostructures during the past few years, we have been collaborating more and more with a goal to further explore some promising human health applications of this technology."

The core multidisciplinary research team members also included: ASU chemistry and biochemistry graduate student and paper first author Xiaowei Liu, visiting professor Yang Xu, chemistry and biochemistry assistant professor Yan Liu, School of Life Sciences undergraduate Craig Clifford and Tao Yu, visiting graduate student from Sichuan University.

Chang points out that vaccines have led to the some of the most effective public health triumphs in all of medicine. The state-of-the-art in vaccine development relies on genetic engineering to assemble immune system stimulating proteins into virus-like particles (VLPs) that mimic the structure of natural viruses---minus the harmful genetic components that cause disease.

DNA nanotechnology, where the molecule of life can be assembled into 2-D and 3-D shapes, has an advantage of being a programmable system that can precisely organize molecules to mimic the actions of natural molecules in the body.

"We wanted to test several different sizes and shapes of DNA nanostructures and attach molecules to them to see if they could trigger an immune response," said Yan, the Milton D. Glick Distinguished Chair in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and researcher in Biodesign's Center for Single Molecule Biophysics. With their biomimicry approach, the vaccine complexes they tested closely resembled natural viral particles in size and shape.

As proof of concept, they tethered onto separate pyramid-shaped and branched DNA structures a model immune stimulating protein called streptavidin (STV) and immune response boosting compound called an adjuvant (CpG oligo-deoxynucletides) to make their synthetic vaccine complexes.

First, the group had to prove that the target cells could gobble the nanostructures up. By attaching a light-emitting tracer molecule to the nanostructures, they found the nanostructures residing comfortably within the appropriate compartment of the cells and stable for several hours----long enough to set in motion an immune cascade.

Next, in a mouse challenge, they targeted the delivery of their vaccine cargo to cells that are first responders in initiating an effective immune response, coordinating interaction of important components, such as: antigen presenting cells, including macrophages, dendritic cells and B cells. After the cargo is internalized in the cell, they are processed and "displayed" on the cell surface to T cells, white blood cells that play a central role in triggering a protective immune response. The T cells, in turn, assist B cells with producing antibodies against a target antigen.

To properly test all variables, they injected: 1) the full vaccine complex 2) STV (antigen) alone 3) the CpG (adjuvant) mixed with STV.

Over the course of 70 days, the group found that mice immunized with the full vaccine complex developed a more robust immune response up to 9-fold higher than the CpG mixed with STV. The pyramid (tetrahedral) shaped structure generated the greatest immune response. Not only was immune response to the vaccine complex specific and effective, but also safe, as the research team showed, using two independent methods, that no immune response triggered from introducing the DNA platform alone.

"We were very pleased," said Chang. "It was so nice to see the results as we predicted. Many times in biology we don't see that."

With the ability to target specific immune cells to generate a response, the team is excited about the prospects of this new platform. They envision applications where they could develop vaccines that require multiple components, or customize their targets to tailor the immune response.

Furthermore, there is the potential to develop targeted therapeutics in a similar manner as some of the new generation of cancer drugs.

Overall, though the field of DNA is still young, the research is advancing at a breakneck pace toward translational science that is making an impact on health care, electronics, and other applications.

While Chang and Yan agree that there is still much room to explore the manipulation and optimization of the nanotechnology, it also holds great promise. "With this proof of concept, the range of antigens that we could use for synthetic vaccine develop is really unlimited," said Chang.

Real Estate News ? What Is A Wet Basement On Buying Carlsbad ...

There really is no question over it: Carlsbad real estate is a superb avenue for the following investment. However, the way it always is using the industry, some investments are superior to others. If you?re really considering buying properties in this area, then you would certainly want to ensure that your investment will be enticing and dependable enough to entice buyers. If you want to live in the house yourself, you?ll definitely need to get one that won?t require repairs that may rack up the expenses. One of the very important points of the household is the basement, as it?s not necessarily only an important section of the foundation, but it may also show if you will discover any problems using the property that ought to have any major vehicle repairs. Here are some signs within the basement you could watch out for prior to deciding to sign on the dotted line.

Water stains on the ground or along the walls could mean trouble. Now it truly is perfectly possible that this was caused simply by overflowing laundry or perhaps a spill (although if your home is being shown by the realtor, that?s remarkably unlikely). That being said, water stains might also mean broken pipes that may cost plenty of money to accessibility and repair.

A damp smell usually means that trouble. This means that this moisture has been there for a short time, and it could be a result of rainwater seeping with the basement windows, or perhaps a problem with the plumbing systems. Independent of the obviously unpleasant stench, the repair costs could accumulate.

Mold can certainly be a deal-breaker for many prospective property potential buyers. Forever justification, far too. Android Phones Hackable? - WordPress.com ? Get a Free Blog Here

?

According to Hacker experts on Wednesday, they demonstrated ways to attack Android?smartphones with methods that work on virtually all devices used today. This comes after the numerous efforts by Google to increase security and protection.

That?s concerning to hear when ?over 6,400 corporate and government security technology workers gather in Las Vegas for a Black Hat Hacking conference to learn about various threats in their networks.

Hacking experts were able to demonstrate that they can deliver malicious code to the Android phones using the new Android feature near field communications. With this code they can essentially take over your phone.

What is near field communications? Basically it allows users to share photos with friends, or other data such as payment just by bringing the Android phones within a few centimetres of another device equipped with the same technology. If you?ve seen the Samsung Galaxy S3 commercials, it?s the part when the guy proposed to the girl by transferring a picture through a glass.

I feel it can be pretty difficult to be a few centimeters away with a phone to take control of an Android phone, however, hackers are able to create a device in the size of a postage stamp which could then be stuck in very discreet places such as a cash register at a restaurant. As a result, when an Android user walks by, the phone would get infected.

Another way Android phones can get infected is through a malicious code that Google publicly disclosed in their Chrome browser. Google fixed the issue in the Chrome browser through updates, however, Android phones are still vulnerable as carriers and device manufacturers have not pushed those fixes or patches to users.

It is interesting because people are saying that Google has pushed some great security features but no one has it.

Another concerning hack that experts revealed in Las Vegas was the fact that they can bypass Gogole?s ?Bouncer? technology which identifies malicious program in its Google Play Store.

All they need to do is create a text message to block the application and then they can easily force it to download more control over the Google Play store until they have full control.

This can be a potentially scary factor when deciding between an Android or an iPhone. It was stated that Apple doesn?t have this type of issue.

I guess that?s the difference when you have an open source like Google and a closed source like Apple, threats like these are less likely to happen, but then again there are a lot of limitations that apple poses that Google users are able to obtain more easily.
