How to Upholster Walls with Fabric

?

Like upholstered furniture, walls covered with fabric over padding add an air of sophistication to a room and display fine workmanship. Batting underneath the fabric pads the walls, enhances the insulating and acoustic features of the fabric wall, and gives the fabric a soft, cushioned appearance.

Instructions

1

To upholster a wall, you first staple bating on the wall. Then you seam fabric panels together into a fabric cover?you?ll need a separate one for each wall you?re upholstering. You staple the outer edges of the fabric cover to the wall over the layer of the batting, the cover the staples and fabric edges with trim. If you want to upholster the ceiling as well, do it before you cover the walls; follow the same procedure as for the walls.

Polyester batting usually won?t deteriorate or decay during the life of your fabric. But upholstered walls are not recommended for kitchens and bathrooms where steam and grease stains can damage fabric and batting fibers. You?ll also want to consider the type of wall you have. Test the wall to see if stapling will damage it. In many cases, the small holes left by the staples can be easily filled with paint or a coat of spackle if you decide to remove the fabric later on.

If the staples can?t puncture the surface, or if they leave large holes and chip the wall surface, mount furring strips to provide a working surface.

2

Equipment and supplies

The most important piece of equipment you?ll need is a staple gun, along with a full box of 3/8-inch staples. An electric staple gun will speed your work and prevent? aching arms and fingers, but because most electric guns have their motors at the head, you can?t use them along the ceiling line (unless there?s a ceiling molding) or in corners. For this close work, you?ll need a handheld staple gun.

A tack hammer may come in handy for tapping in any staples that don?t penetrate deeply enough. You?ll need cardboard tack strips to hold the stapled fabric securely and maintain sharp edges in corners. You can purchase strips in an upholstery shop; buy enough stripping to run the height of the wall for all inside corners to be covered.

A steel tape measure, more accurate than a fabric tape, is an essential tool. Craft glue is used to apply trim to fabric edges and adhere fabric to faceplates (spray adhesive can be substituted on faceplates).

Also, have a staple remover, fabric shears, long push pins (the ?-inch size available in stationery stores), a razor knife, utility razor blades (the type available in hardware stores), and a broad knife oral straightedge.

When you staple along the ceiling line, use a stepladder that?s taller than the height at which you need to stand to reach the ceiling comfortably. Or you can make a simple scaffold. A sewing machine is necessary if you need to stitch lengths of fabric together. Use an iron to remove fabric creases and press seams open.
