Phil Schiller explains why there is no NFC or wireless charging on the iPhone 5

iPhone 5 specs

Prior to the iPhone 5 event we saw a lot of rumors floated about NFC (Near Field Communications) and whether or not Apple would include it in their new, flagship device. Now that the event is over, the iPhone 5 is here, and NFC isn't, many people are surprised by the ommission, and by the ommission of ?wireless charging.?In an interview with AllThingsD's Ina Fried, Apple Senior VP Phil Schiller laid out the reasons for the lack of NFC and wireless charging in the iPhone 5:

It?s not clear that NFC is the solution to any current problem, Schiller said. ?Passbook does the kinds of things customers need today.

On the topic of wireless charging, similar ideals were stated:

Schiller noted that the wireless charging systems still have to be plugged into the wall, so it?s not clear how much convenience they add. The widely-adopted USB cord, meanwhile, can charge in wall outlets, computers and even on airplanes, he said. ?Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated,? Schiller said.

In speaking of the new dock connector, Schiler highlighted how thin the new iPhone 5 was and stated that design has been in use since iPods as far back as 2003, in order to meet the size demands of today and create products as thin as what Apple unveiled, a change and adoption of the new "Lightning" connector was needed

?This is the new connector for many years to come,? he said.

In other words, yes, you may have to pick up some accessories but those accessories will be able to be used over the next few years. Anyone think Apple's making a short-term mistake and NFC and wireless charging will be must-have competive features this year?

More expensive gas pushes up US wholesale prices

(AP) ? A sharp rise in gasoline costs drove up wholesale prices last month by the most in more than three years. But outside energy and food, price gains were mild.

The producer price index, which measures price changes before they reach the consumer, jumped 1.7 percent in August, the Labor Department said Thursday. The increase was mostly because gas prices soared 13.6 percent, the biggest gain in three years.

Food prices rose 0.9 percent, driven up by steep increases in the cost of eggs and dairy products.

Excluding the volatile food and gas categories, core wholesale prices rose only 0.2 percent, below July's increase.

In the past 12 months, wholesale prices have increased 2 percent, a mild gain and far below the recent peak of 7.1 percent in July 2011. Core wholesale prices have risen 2.5 percent in the past year, the same annual pace as in July.

Food prices are likely to rise further in the coming months as the Midwest drought has made corn, soybeans and other grains much more expensive. Sweet corn prices jumped 44 percent last month, the most in a year and a half.

Higher corn prices raise costs for many different foods on grocery store shelves. Corn is used to make everything from cosmetics to cereal, soda, cake mixes and candy bars. It is also used as a feed for cattle and hogs. That means more expensive corn can also push up beef and pork prices.

A measure of food prices in earlier stages of processing rose 2.4 percent last month, the biggest gain in about 18 months. The increase was mostly because the cost of animal feed rose.

Gas prices have rebounded after falling from nearly $4 a gallon in the spring. Prices at the pump averaged $3.87 a gallon nationwide Thursday. That's 17 cents higher than a month earlier.

But overall, economists aren't worried that inflation is rapidly accelerating. With U.S. economic growth weak and unemployment high, workers' wages are barely keeping up with inflation. That means consumers won't be able to pay much higher prices.

"We foresee little impetus for significant, sustained upside pressure on prices at the producer level," Joshua Shapiro, chief economist at MFR Inc., said in an email.

The government will issue its August report on consumer prices Friday. In July, consumer prices were unchanged, and rose only 1.4 percent in the previous 12 months. That's below the Federal Reserve's informal target of a 2 percent annual increase.

Low inflation means consumers have more money to spend, which helps the economy. It also gives the Federal Reserve more leeway to keep interest rates low in an effort to spur economic growth. If prices were to begin rising rapidly, the Fed might be forced to raise rates in response.

Most analysts expect the Fed to take new steps to boost economic growth at the end of a two-day meeting on Thursday. Those steps could include a third round of Treasury bond purchases. The goal of the purchases would be to lower interest rates and spur more borrowing and spending.

Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said in a recent speech that high unemployment is "a grave concern" that causes "enormous suffering." Those remarks were seen by many economists as a sign that Bernanke was likely to take more action.

Ashton: more sanctions on Syria, Iran an option

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) ? The EU's foreign policy chief says more sanctions against Syria and Iran are being weighed.

Catherine Ashton said Saturday that a top priority for the EU is to offer its full backing to the new U.N.-Arab League envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, who is set to begin mediation efforts to end the violence between Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime and opposition groups seeking to topple his rule.

Speaking to reporters at the end of an EU foreign ministers meeting in Cyprus, she urged Syrian opposition groups to form a united front against the Assad regime in order to make all Syrians feel secure about their future.

On Iran, Ashton said that she will "do everything I can" to ensure Iran complies with its obligations regarding its nuclear program.

Dutch Police Ask 8000+ Citizens To Provide Their DNA

Individuals answer the question differently. What happens if you say no, I wonder?

"No-one will be forced to comply, the department said."

Essentially, they're doing the same thing we're already doing in the US. If you say no, the authorities start implying that you're probably the guilty party. They start investigating you as the real suspect, and during the course of their investigation into your background, it becomes clear to all your friends, girlfriend/wife, coworkers, and family members, that you must have refused to supply them with your dna sample, or refused to take the lie detector test (otherwise, they wouldn't be asking such questions).

And they're claiming they're looking for "family members", but notice they're not asking for dna samples from female participants. Either this is a little white lie designed to minimize the outrage the men must be feeling at being singled out, or perhaps they're hoping to nab a male teenager through the analysis of his fathers' dna (since getting dna from hundreds of male teenagers in the vicinity may actually be harder to achieve politically) .

The Corsair : Gotta Dance! The Art of the Dance Movie Poster

The centuries old Roy Jones House has been home to the California Heritage Museum since 1979. Intended as a sanctuary for California culture, former exhibits have included local themes such as, ?Skateboard,? ?Mexican Calendar Girls,? and ?Lights! Camera! Glamour!?

Currently, the main exhibit is ?Gotta Dance! The Art of the Dance Movie Poster,? which consists of over 90 different movie posters, many of which were created for foreign audiences as early as 1925. The posters range in various languages, like Italian, Swedish and French.

Just as films are used as a medium to display an actor?s talents, movie posters were once a testament to the poster artist?s creativity. A movie poster used to set the tone and feeling of a film. They were the equivalent of today?s movie trailers.

The magnificent illustrations and vibrant colors of the movie posters bring across a vivid impression to mesmerize the viewers. But, having a quality movie poster is no longer common in film advertisements.

The risqu?, illustrated posters display curvaceous hips, and legs of semi-nude actresses, leaping and twirling through the air. In one poster, a woman is dancing amorously with a man in a black tuxedo, while her pink nipples are clearly visible underneath her white dress. The movie posters have a sophisticated sex appeal.

A small section of the museum serves as a mini-theater where museum-goers can sit and watch snippets of classic movies, commentary by directors, actors, and those who enjoyed the films from back in their day. This is a film buff?s chance to have an immersive experience with classic movies and the history behind them.

For anyone looking to uncover some of the mystery of Old Hollywood, the museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and student admission is five dollars. ?Gotta Dance!? ends on September 30.
