LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The suits have knocked off the superheroes at the box office.
Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones' sequel "Men in Black 3" debuted as the No. 1 movie over Memorial Day weekend with $55 million domestically from Friday to Sunday.
That bumps Disney's "The Avengers" into second-place after three blockbuster weekends on top for the superhero sensation. "The Avengers" took in $37 million over the three days to push its domestic total to $514 million and become only the fourth movie ever to top half a billion dollars.
Distributor Sony estimates that by the end of the four-day holiday weekend Monday, "Men in Black 3" will have pulled in $70 million domestically and $202 million worldwide.
Universal's "Battleship" was No. 3 in its second weekend with $10.8 million, raising its domestic earnings to $44.3 million. Paramount's comedy "The Dictator" took in $9.6 million to finish fourth in its second weekend and lift its total to $41.5 million.
The Warner Bros. horror tale "Chernobyl Diaries" opened at No. 5 with $8 million.
"Men in Black 3" launched with a bit more cash than its two predecessors, which both had opening weekends of just above $50 million.
But the original "Men in Black" debuted in 1997 and "Men in Black II" premiered in 2002, when admission prices were much lower than today's. That means "Men in Black 3" sold fewer tickets than the previous installments.
"Men in Black 3" reunites Smith's Agent J and Jones' Agent K as they battle a new alien menace that travels four decades back in time to do away with the younger Agent K (Josh Brolin).
Among the movie's box-office highlights overseas were debuts of $19.5 million in China, $18.9 million in Russia, $8.5 million in South Korea and $8 million in Japan.
Distributor Disney estimates that "The Avengers" will take in $47.1 million for the four-day holiday weekend, lifting the film's domestic total to $523.8 million. That will put "The Avengers" within $10 million of "The Dark Knight," the No. 3 movie on the all-time revenue chart with $533.3 million domestically.
"The Avengers" will pass "The Dark Knight" in the coming week, leaving only two movies above it: "Avatar" at $760.5 million and "Titanic" at $658.5 million.
With $26.3 million overseas, "The Avengers" raised its international total to $781.6 million, and its worldwide revenues to just under $1.3 billion. "The Avengers" will soon overtake "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" at $1.33 billion to become the No. 3 film on the global revenue list, again behind "Avatar" at $2.8 billion and "Titanic" at $2.2 billion.
Overall domestic receipts for the four-day Memorial Day weekend will come in well behind last year's record of $276 million. Paul Dergarabedian, an analyst for box-office tracker Hollywood.com, estimated that four-day revenues this time will total $195 million to $200 million, about 30 percent below Memorial Day weekend a year ago, when "The Hangover Part II" delivered a $100 million-plus debut.
Hollywood remains on a record pace this year, with domestic revenue so far at $4.24 billion, up 12.5 percent over 2011 receipts, according to Hollywood.com.
But "The Avengers" and now "Men in Black 3" have been the only notable successes for the summer season so far, with big releases such as "Dark Shadows" and "Battleship" fizzling on the domestic front.
"We really need to get going if we don't want to have play catch-up every weekend through the summer," Dergarabedian said. "Some of these summer movies are just not doing the business people had hoped for in North America."

At first perspective, NovaLogic's delta force doesn't look like the kind of activity activity you might anticipate to see here at the end end of 1998. After all, a activity title in this category has to be 3D faster to be excellent, right? Not actually. If ever there was a activity title that proven the value of game perform over style, it's delta force.delta force is a activity title of unique causes battle against enemy and rebel causes. You can perform the overall activity from either a first- or third-person point of perspective. You can even do both as well, thanks to the picture-in-picture function that allows you see your first-person perspective in a small screen while enjoying the overall activity from a third-person POV.
While evaluations to Spectrum Six are unavoidable, delta force holds only a going likeness to Red Storm's strategic shooting. First of all, you do not strategy your own functions in delta force; they are allocated to you. You also do not have the high-class of dealing with seven team partners. You will usually have two to four other defense force in the area with you, but they create up individual attack groups that you cannot management (and which often have individual, particular purpose goals). Lastly, each of the mission's 40 tasks occurs in the outside. The only real likeness between the two movie games is the unique causes position and the semirealistic activity where one taken results in one eliminate.
delta force contains five single-player strategies, each against a different foe in a different theater: a medication master in Peru, terrorists in Chad, terrorists in Philippines, insurgents in Uzbekistan, and more terrorists on the European isle of Novaya Zemlya. The vegetation (which is globally sparse), the structures, and the bad folks all differ from area to area, though the scenery are all very much the same except for shade changes (green for forest, tan for the wasteland, bright for the cold arctic team, and so on). Moving mountains and flatlands rough by deeply, sleek canyons are very much the conventional geography type here.
Most of your tasks consist of discovering and removing an attacker platform, but these are well different because of variations between the many facets you attack. At the beginning of the overall activity, for example, you'll experience attacker strongholds that are usually covered by feet defense force, a few roving patrols, and maybe a secure structure or two. Later on, these facets become much more powerful, with sand traps, blade cable walls, improved patrols, and even a few attacker choppers.
The attack-and-destroy tasks are distributed with a normal and balanced number of other circumstances. For example, there are a few tasks where you will have to integrate a platform to grab a laptop computer or some other resource of intellect information. Others consist of save tasks, convoy ambushes, and (in one of my favorites) laser-designating objectives for naval bombardment. Overall, the purpose style in delta force is very powerful. Another good observe is the truth that you have a lot of management over the order in which these tasks are accomplished. You can even miss around from cinema to cinema, if you like. And even though the primary objective is very much the same throughout (kill all the bad folks and create it to your removal factor alive), the purpose essentials are different enough to keep things interesting, complicated, and reasonably clean.
One factor where delta force could take a position some enhancement, however, is in the mission-planning stage. As said before, you have no say in the purpose strategy itself. You can modify your beginning devices and weapons, but the purpose waypoints are set - and taking once life. Nearly every purpose is organized out so that your first number of or so actions will take you immediately into the center of hefty, focused attacker flame. The best way to finish most tasks is to neglect the waypoints entirely and create your way gradually around the purpose, sniping all noticeable bad folks from excessive variety before going in to mop up the heirs. Unfortunately, the motions of your other defense force seem to be activated by the waypoints, so they will not always shift if you don't shift over a particular identify on the map. This was especially obvious on the last purpose in Novaya Zemlya, where my close friends in Charlie Group remained securely hunkered down in a dump - about 10 toes from a list of four terrorists - throughout the whole purpose.
Then again, the computer-controlled excellent folks aren't often much help anyway (particularly Charlie Group, which was about as useful as red tops in Celebrity Trek). For some reason, these inadequate fools got damaged beginning in almost every individual purpose, often before I could even create it to my first few waypoints (maybe that's why they wouldn't keep their beginning on the last mission?). The AI for attacker soldiers, on the other hand, is quite excellent. As opposed to in Spectrum Six, a bad guy in delta force will most certainly answer when you strike away his good friend - and so will a number of or so of his friends. Opening with an automated system from an unsecured identify is actual destruction, as the bad folks will easily home in on your flow of flame and remove you out. Also, a few photos in the incorrect position or at the incorrect time will generate lots of supports to create your job more challenging. Still, for the benefit of playability and activity stability, the bad folks usually existing you with a excellent focus on and stop enough between photos to give you a while to react to an attack.
Your capability to find and eliminate your attacker, however, is immediately proportionate to the rate and power of your PC. According to NovaLogic's extremely improved Voxel Area 3 website, the unaccelerated style in delta force are efficient, with even an temporary sign of elegance - but only on a well-equipped Pentium II device. The mission's lowest specifications involves a Pentium 166 with 32MB RAM, but on a Pentium 233 with 64MB RAM and a 12MB Voodoo 2 card, the overall activity indexed along at any quality greater than 512x384 at 256 colours and checked rather unpleasant at any of the reduced configurations. Unless you have at least a Pentium II 300 with 64MB RAM and an 8MB movie card, you will have difficulties choosing out attacker soldiers from the various colored sections that create up the surroundings. NovaLogic is allegedly operating on a 3Dfx identify that will rate up the personality animated graphics and the developing making (all of which is polygonal), but no launch time frame has been set for that identify.
Still, the tepid design website does not damage farmville. So long as you have the components to run it at 640x480 with 16 thousand colours (the mentioned Pentium II 300 can do this just fine), delta force can actually be quite amazing from a visible viewpoint. The charts are all very well developed, as are the various facets, airfields, and other goals you'll experience. The gamer and attacker animated graphics are amazing and genuine. The loss of life animated graphics even differ based on where a personality is taken. And the going geography creates sniping a actual task, as you often have to delay for a bad guy to pop up from behind a increase before taking the lead to. The concept was to make credible outside conditions where battle could take place at excessive varies (we're discussing varies of up to a distance here), and delta force truly provides in that regard.
The mission's Dolby Pro Sense 3D positional audio and amazing appears to be make the war even more genuine and immersive. The audio of principal points racing by is often the only sign you have that you're under flame. When you listen to slugs reaching the earth all around you, you know that it's a chance to shift and shift quick. Also, the yells of your opponents (which come finish in a terminology indigenous to the theater) will let you know whether or not you've been seen. Once, after capturing a Peruvian at point-blank variety, I observed him raise your voice "Medico! Medico!" before crumpling to the earth.
The system appears to be, from the under control H&K MP5 to the awesome M249 SAW, are absolutely amazing - perhaps the best I've ever observed. In multi-player games, the system appears to be of 32 gamers incorporate into an memorable din. When you get into a multi-player activity of delta force on NovaWorld, NovaLogic's free game playing assistance, you will feel like you're coming into a actual battle location.
In common, multi-player games of delta force are really fun - when they perform. NovaWorld is very obviously missing in the information division, and reviews are traveling all over the Net about issues getting farmville to perform well over hub and common Internet hyperlinks. Still, if you get NovaWorld on a excellent day and at pleasant, you're in for a cure. delta force online is one of the most pleasant and fascinating multi-player encounters I've ever had. Game versions like get the banner, queen of the mountain, and group deathmatch are a actual boost no issue how many gamers are in a activity title. While the overall activity has several faults, such as terrible bending, doubtful balance, and unusual reviewing bugs, it's still a lot of fun. Hopefully, NovaLogic will deal with the mission's issues in a spot or two. One function it should add is the capability for gamers to start their own games on NovaWorld (currently, you are restricted to a set number of games already in progress). And for all you deathmatch enthusiasts out there, ignore all that junk about the evils of camping outdoors. Sniping is the key to success in delta force. If your CTF group does not have a sniper or two in the mountains, for example, you simply will not win.
delta force is a very amazing activity overall, despite the restrictions of the design website and the multi-player faults. The amazing single-player game play, the strong multi-player element, and the amazingly immersive war atmosphere make for a truly amazing activity. Any activity fan who is open-minded enough to look previous the design website will see a activity title that quickly rankings with Spectrum Six as one of the seasons best "alternative photographers." Just make sure you have a highly effective system, otherwise you'll spend all of your rounds capturing at p you could almost believe had just been going.

NJ officials: NYPD Muslim surveillance legal, Huge Defeat for ...
Despite the best efforts of Hamas-linked CAIR's Honest Ibe Hooper and Nihad Awad, it is still legal for Americans to defend themselves against Islamic jihad. At least so far.
"NYPD Muslim surveillance legal, New Jersey officials say," from the Associated Press, May 26:
TRENTON, N.J. ? New York City police did not violate New Jersey laws when they conducted surveillance of Muslim businesses, mosques and student groups, Gov. Chris Christie's administration said Thursday following a three-month review, a finding that angered Muslim leaders who had sought a clampdown on the cross-border police operations. The conclusion by Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa, a Christie appointee asked by the governor to look into the spying, means New Jersey Muslims have no state recourse to stop the New York Police Department from infiltrating student groups, videotaping mosque-goers or collecting their license plate numbers as they pray.
Such operations were part of a widespread NYPD program to collect intelligence on Muslim communities both inside New York and beyond. Undercover officers and informants eavesdropped in Muslim cafes and monitored sermons, even when there was no evidence of a crime. The result was that many innocent business owners, students and others were cataloged in police files.
The interstate surveillance efforts, revealed by The Associated Press earlier this year, angered many Muslims and New Jersey officials. Some, like Newark Mayor Cory Booker and the state's top FBI official, criticized the tactics. Others, like Christie, focused more on the fact that the NYPD didn't tell New Jersey exactly what it was up to.
In response, Chiesa launched what he described as a fact-finding review. That review concluded that the NYPD's operations violated no state laws, either civil or criminal....
Chiesa, the governor's former chief counsel and a longtime confidante, outlined the state's findings in closed-door meetings Thursday afternoon with Muslim leaders.
"We remain committed to striking the appropriate balance of ensuring the safety of our citizens through vigilance in fighting terrorism, while not undermining the public's confidence in how we approach that mission," Chiesa said in a written statement.
Muslim leaders said they were told that every instance of NYPD activity in New Jersey had been justified by a lead, but that the attorney general would not provide any details on the nature of any of those leads, saying the fact-finding was ongoing.
They said that they did not find the assertion credible and that their efforts to maintain communication between the community and law enforcement would be hurt by the findings that the NYPD had done nothing wrong ? and could keep doing what they have been doing.
"It was basically an, 'FYI, good Thursday afternoon, let it die in the media before the Memorial Day weekend,'" said Mohamed El-Filali, executive director of the Islamic Center of Passaic County, across the Hudson River from New York. If the surveillance of every mosque, burger joint and barbershop targeted was justified, he asked, why were no arrests made?
Aref Assaf of the American Arab Forum said the attorney general made them feel like second-class citizens.
"I said to him it's not only insulting, it's offensive to our sense of justice, that you bring us to Trenton to tell us that you accept as legal and valid the actions of the NYPD, and I will not be surprised if you're issuing an order informing your law enforcement officials that they too can spy on American Muslisms [sic] because if it's legal for NYPD, than it must be legal for NJ to do the same."
The Muslim leaders said they would consider all legal options, including renewed appeals for action by the U.S. Justice Department. A federal civil rights lawsuit has also been considered....
The NYPD has long maintained that its operations were lawful and necessary to keep the city safe. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the NYPD can gather intelligence anywhere in the country it wants and is not required to tell local authorities. NYPD lawyers say they are not bound by jurisdictional lines because they are just collecting intelligence, not making arrests or otherwise acting as police.
Told of New Jersey's findings, Bloomberg's spokesman, Marc La Vorgna, said in a statement: "We've said it time and again, NYPD has kept the city safe and they conduct their work legally."
The attorney general said a directive he issued requires all New Jersey law enforcement agencies to notify the New Jersey State Police Counter-Terrorism Bureau and the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness if they hear of outside departments working in New Jersey. The state agencies will then coordinate with the Joint Terrorism Task Force, of which the NYPD is a member.
Chiesa said he is also establishing a Muslim outreach committee....
Oh, good. That will solve everything.

Victorian companies tap into Middle East automotive industry
The Victorian Government, in cooperation with the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association, has supported Australia?s largest ever export mission to the Automechanika Middle East Trade Show, which has been underway in Dubai this week. Participation of companies from Victoria has increased by 30 per cent on last year?s delegation, further underlining the emphasis the State is putting on the Middle East Automotive Aftermarket industry.
John Butler, State Government of Victoria Commissioner to the Middle East and North Africa, said last year?s trade show saw over 70 per cent of participating companies attract new business, with even more expected this year.
?This is one of the most important automotive markets in the world,? said Mr Butler. ?We will continue to focus our efforts on developing key relationships and creating trade opportunities for Victorian companies here, just as we have done for many years now. We are confident in what we can bring to the market, and our world-class expertise, knowledge, innovation and quality products is growing in demand following a long-standing commitment to the region.?
This is the sixth year the State Government of Victoria has supported a trade delegation to Automechanika Middle East, and the twelfth year Australia has been participating in one form or another in the Emirate?s annual automotive event.
Over fifteen Victorian companies from the automotive aftermarket manufacturing industry are either exhibiting or have a presence at the trade show, which offers participants the opportunity to meet with industry leaders and learn the latest industry trends.
Ben Bartlett, Senior Manager Government Relations and International with the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association, says there are a number of sectors which present real opportunities for Victorian companies.
?We are seeing significant growth in the four wheel drive market, in particular when it comes to suspension,? he said. ?There are challenging off road conditions in the Middle East and there are no more challenging conditions than in Australia, so our companies are able to offer road products that fit the marketplace. There is also strong potential growth in the performance and tuning sectors.?
Craig Mahoney, International Sales and Marketing Manager from Mainline DynoLog Dyamometers, who provide advanced vehicle performance measurement technology, has been visiting Dubai for the past three years around the trade show.
?There is a high respect for Australian made products in this region,? he said. ?We have been here for three years now and we want to keep returning and flying the flag to create strong and long-standing relationships. We come here and we get to know our customers well and also their customers, which we think is very important. It?s led to 90 per cent of our business being based on recommendations.?
First-time exhibitor Toby Dymond, Managing Director of Penrite Oil, a family owned Victorian company with 85 years experience in quality lubricants, said his company is looking for export growth throughout the region.
?Our growth strategy is focused on exports,? he said. ?We manufacture engine oils, transmission fluids, brake fluids, coolants for performance automobiles, trucks and motorcycles and our objective here is to find local distributors.?
Victoria is the home of Australia?s automotive industry, with 54 per cent of the country?s automotive exports coming from the State. Ford, Toyota and Holden all have a large presence in Victoria, along with over 150 Australian, European, Japanese and American component manufacturers.
Companies that exhibited in the Australian Pavilion included Airbag Man, Alloy Race Components, Ateco Equipment, Automotive Parts Australia, Black Widow, Camtech, Couplertec Electronic Rust Proofing, Crow Cams, Dobinsons Springs Suspension, Mackay Consolidated Industries, Mainline Dynolog Dynamometers, Penrite Oil, Powerdown, Precision Parts, Premier Auto Trade, The Ultimate Suspension, TJM Products Pty Ltd.
